Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend December 20, 2005 Pirates muscle up to down Eagle Point Prep Basketball Roundup EAGLE POINT — The Phoenix boys basketball team continues to improve as the season unfolds. Monday was a major step forward in that process as the Pirates used a pair of timely 3-pointers and a physical defensive effort to slip by Eagle Point, 48-44, in overtime. Dan Ritchie responded to a late deficit with a game-tying 3-pointer and Ben Decuir nailed a trey to give Phoenix the lead for good in the extra session. The Pirates went on to convert 7 of 10 from the free-throw line in OT and were 16-for-24 overall to seal the win. "It was a great game," said Pirates coach Kevin Dixon. "It was a knock-down, drag-out battle. We just made some plays when we needed to." Phoenix (6-1) struggled offensively, shooting just 13-for-41, but used a physical defensive approach to bottle up Eagle Point in the clutch. Advertisement Dixon pointed to the defensive work of Brandon Sanders on Eagle Point Derek Grieve as a key to the victory. Sanders, a 6-foot-2, 210-pound senior, came off the bench to limit Grieve to six points after the Eagle Point senior post entered the contest averaging in double figures. "(Sanders) didn’t score but he banged Grieve the whole night," Dixon said. Junior point guard Dustin Smith led the Pirates with 15 points, while fellow guard Joey Shepherd added 12. Marty Joseph had 11 points and six rebounds and Decuir hauled in seven boards to pace Phoenix on the glass. Mychal Williams scored 12 points to lead Eagle Point (3-5), while Austin Owens had eight rebounds.
