Wildfires near Cave Junction contained By Mail Tribune staff Feb 15, 2022 08:41 AM A A Oregon Department of Southwest Oregon District crews are battling two small wildfires reported late Monday morning about 10 miles northeast of Cave Junction. [ODF Southwest Oregon District photo] Thanks to the quick work of local firefighters and a little help from Mother Nature, two small wildfires that broke about 10 miles northeast of Cave Junction midday Monday were largely snuffed out by the end of the day. Two wildfires near Little Grayback Peak first reported shortly before noon Monday were fully lined later that evening, according to a 7 p.m. update from the Oregon Department of Forestry Southwest Oregon District Facebook page. The largest of the two fires never grew beyond its footprint of 1.5 acres. As of Monday night, the fire was 80% mopped up. Crews will continue mopup work today. The smaller of the two fires, measured at roughly a tenth of an acre, is in terrain that will be more difficult to access for mopup; however, the fire is no longer active due to rainy conditions.
