Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend March 13, 2006 Shakespeare fest announces 72nd season By BILLVARBLE Mail Tribune Libby Appel will direct her own adaptation of Anton Chekhov’s "The Cherry Orchard" in 2007, her last season as artistic director at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. The festival’s 72nd season was announced Friday during a board meeting. "I’m always filled with anticipation as we develop plans for the new season," Appel said, noting that putting together her final season was an added thrill. The season includes a chamber musical commissioned for the festival, some cutting-edge works and of course lots of Shakespeare. Appel’s adaptation of "The Cherry Orchard" will be from a literal translation by Allison Horsley, literary manager at the La Jolla Playhouse. "Tracy’s Tiger" is a chamber musical adapted from a novel by William Saroyan by OSF Associate Artistic Director Penny Metropulos, OSF actor Linda Alper, former OSF Director of Literary Development and Dramaturgy Douglas Langworthy and composer Sterling Tinsley. "Tracy’s Tiger" will be directed by Metropulos and presented in the OSF’s New Theatre with a cast of 10 actors and three to four musicians. Advertisement David Lindsay-Abaire’s "Rabbit Hole" will open in the New Theatre at the top of the season. Lindsay-Abaire’s quirky comedy "Fuddy Meers" was produced at OSF in 2001. OSF Associate Artist James Edmondson will also direct "Rabbit Hole." The play is described as a drama about a couple dealing with an agonizing loss. It premiered this year to acclaim at the Manhattan Theatre Club, where it continues to run. Opening in July at the New Theatre will be Lisa Loomer’s "Distracted," about one mother’s wild journey to figure out if her son has attention deficit disorder. It will premiere in early 2007 at the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles. At the top of the season in the Angus-Bowmer Theatre will be William Shakespeare’s "As You Like It," directed by J.R. Sullivan, who directed OSF’s 2005 production of "Room Service." From Tom Stoppard will come the rollicking comedy "On the Razzle," directed by guest artist Laird Williamson. The third play to open will be the world premiere adaptation of the new "The Cherry Orchard." August Wilson’s "Gem of the Ocean," the ninth play in his dramatic saga of African-Americans, will open in April. Directed by Associate Artistic Director Timothy Bond, it will feature Greta Oglesby in the role of Aunt Ester. The final Bowmer show to open will be Moli�re’s classic "Tartuffe," which was last produced at OSF in 1978. Guest artist Peter Amster will direct. Some of Shakespeare’s most popular plays will be produced on the Elizabethan Stage. Guest artist Bill Rauch will direct "Romeo and Juliet." OSF newcomer Kate Buckley will direct "The Taming of the Shrew." Appel will direct "The Tempest." For more information, visit osfashland.org.
