Overall, the city saw the warmest average mean temperature — the average of all high and low temperatures — on record for the year, at 58.9 degrees, according to the National Weather Service. That beat out the previous record of 57.6 degrees set in 1992. For just the average high temperature, Medford reached 71.5 degrees for the year, runner-up to 1992's 71.7-degree winner. "We just missed it," said National Weather Service meteorologist Brad Schaaf. The 2014 low-temperature average was also the warmest on record at 43.7 degrees. The previous record, 43.3 degrees, was set in 1934. On the year, Medford residents experienced 81 days in which temperatures climbed above 90 degrees, and 45 days where they dipped below 32. The warmest day was July 28, with a sweltering 106 degrees. The lowest the temperature dipped was Jan. 5, when it fell to 18 degrees. The summer and fall seasons also saw the highest average mean temperatures on records. Summer's average mean temperature reached 74.9 degrees, beating out the previous 74-degree record holder from 2013. Fall's 59.7-degree record-breaker beat the previous record by just over one degree — 58.6 — set in 2012. July also saw the warmest high temperature average for that month, climbing to 96.9 degrees.That beat out a record that had previously stood unchallenged for 103 years — 96.7 degrees in 1911. The heat records even continued during the colder months, Weather Service officials said. It was the warmest December on record, with an average high temperature of 52.9 degrees.
