Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend April 17, 2005 Olson doubles his fun Eagle Point weightman wins shot, discus; Summit claims ‘Classic’ titles By DON HUNT Mail Tribune CENTRAL POINT — Jake Olson doesn’t hide the fact that he likes to throw the shot put much more than the discus. But the latter gained some ground at the 35th annual Crater Classic on Saturday. Olson won the discus with a lifetime-best throw of 152 feet, 6 inches and later claimed the shot put with a mark of 54-10 in joining Crater’s Adam Goff as the only local double winners at the prestigious meet that featured 25 schools. Summit High of Bend showcased its impressive sprint corps to claim both sides of the coed competition on the drizzly, dank day at Crater High. The Summit boys racked up 103 points to hold off defending champion Crater, which totaled 80, while the Storm girls amassed 84 points compared to 67 for runner-up Klamath Union and 66 for Grants Pass. Summit also took the combined team title with 187 points. Crater was second with 103 and Grants Pass third with 99. Advertisement Olson trailed Marist’s Eric Wood in the discus with just one throw left. After consulting with Eagle Point throws coach Ken Donnelly, Olson stepped back in the ring and launched his all-time best heave. "He (Donnelly) told me to slow down in the back (of the ring)," said Olson. "I was in too much of a hurry at the start of my spin and the discus was coming out of my hand awkwardly. "It’s funny how one little flaw can make such a big difference." Olson’s mark in the discus ranks as the sixth-farthest in the state this season. The 6-foot-4, 350-pound senior admitted that with a few more throws like he had Saturday, he may come to like the discus almost as much as the shot put. Olson is the state leader in the shot at 57-1½ . "The shot put has always been my favorite and still is, but I’ve been putting more technique work in the discus, and I guess it paid off today," Olson said. "It’s nice to have a good day in both." Jered McClellan provided the Eagle Point boys with a sweep of the throwing events when he launched the javelin 179-8. Goff, meanwhile, blazed to victory in the 110-meter hurdles in 14.98 seconds, then shaved a sizable 1.55 seconds off his previous best time in the 300 hurdles to win that event in 40.33. What made Goff’s win in the 300 hurdles particularly noteworthy was that he did it from lane No. 8, where he couldn’t see any of his competitors until he reached the home stretch. Goff entered the meet with only the eighth-fastest clocking, but got off to a fast start and never trailed. "He came out of nowhere to win that event," Crater coach Hans Smith said. "He just took off, and no one could catch him. I kept waiting for him to die, but he didn’t." Crater also received a strong double from distance ace Isaac Stoutenburgh. The smooth-running junior dominated the 3,000 by clocking 8:46.48, a lifetime best outdoors (he ran 8:41 on an indoor track at the University of Washington in January). Earlier Saturday, Stoutenburgh clocked a personal-record 4:01.28 in the 1,500 but lost out to Summit’s Kenyon Neuman (3:59.71) and Ashland’s David Morgan (4:00.24). In that race, Stoutenburgh got boxed in on the final lap. "That made me pretty angry," Stoutenburgh said. "I went into the 3,000 with a chip on my shoulder." Stoutenburgh sped to a 64-second first lap, only to have Bend’s Chris Giever on his shoulder. The Crater runner continued to put the pedal to the metal, rattling off several 67- and 68- second laps, and finally shook Giever with about four laps to go. Giever finished a distant second in 8:58.3. "(Crater distance) coach (Justin Loftus) told me not to be afraid to go out hard," said Stoutenburgh, whose 3,000 time was the sixth-fastest in the state this season. "I did that, and I just kept hammering." Sprint standout Nathan Crabtree fought off a cold to win the 100 (11.13), 400 (50.03) and run legs on triumphant 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams to lead Summit. The Storm ran a sizzling 3:24.29 in the 4x400 relay, shaving 1.26 seconds off its previous state-leading time. "We had to leave seven kids home today (because of illness), but that didn’t stop us," said Summit coach Dave Turnbull, who himself was fighting the bug. "This is a great group of kids, not only from a talent standpoint but also the way they conduct themselves." Kourtney Parks won the 100 (12.96), Lindsay Zimmerman claimed the 100 hurdles (15.9) and Zoe Roy outkicked South Eugene’s Erin Gray to take the 1,500 (4:48.57) and fuel the Summit girls to the title. The only local girls to bag individual victories Saturday were Rogue River’s Danielle Holmes in the shot put (37-6¾ ) and South Medford’s Kaylyn Knutson in the long jump (16- 8½ ). Knutson, a senior who owns five district titles in the sprints and long jump, had been sidelined with tendinitis in both knees until returning for a dual meet Thursday. "I’ve only practiced two days," said Knutson, who holds the South Medford long jump record at 18-4½ . "I haven’t been able to do any interval work on the track, but I’m hoping to get back at it next week. "It feels good just to be back out here." The Grants Pass girls finished the meet in grand style by winning the 4x400 relay in a state-best time of 4:04.64. Senior Katlyn Van Brunt ran a speedy 57.2-second anchor leg to pull the Cavers past Marist, which clocked 4:05.29.
