The 6-foot-8 senior post turned in his pads for his sneakers and torched South Medford for 31 points Friday in a 64-53 win over the fourth-ranked Panthers in the semifinals of the Red Bluff Holiday Classic. South Medford (4-2) plays host Red Bluff in a consolation game at 4:30 p.m. today. Lomax made the Lakers’ first seven points and had 18 at halftime. He knocked down three 3-pointers for the game. "Wherever (Lomax) shot it from, it went in," said South Medford coach Dennis Murphy. "He shot it better from the perimeter than we thought he would." Advertisement Both schools were missing their sophomore stars. Lake Oswego’s Kevin Love has not yet returned to action since having knee surgery before the season, while South’s Kyle Singler is still recuperating from a broken thumb on his shooting hand suffered during football. Despite Lomax’s big first half, South clung to a 30-29 lead at the break largely due to making 6 of 12 from 3-point range. "We told the kids at halftime, ‘If you live by the 3 you can die by the 3,’" said Murphy, whose warning rang true in the second half. The Panthers were 0 of 9 on 3-pointers and shot 7 of 26 from the field in the second half. "They were zoning, and we shot the ball very poorly," said Murphy. "We didn’t make them move the zone at all." Guards Isaiah Adams and Michael Harthun each tallied 13 points for South. Center Brent Johnson, who scored 30 points in a victory over Helix on Thursday, was held to 10 points. "We didn’t compete as hard in the second half as we needed to," said Murphy. "We didn’t defend very well in the second half. When you don’t defend and don’t make shots, it’s tough to win." The Pelicans (1-5) connected on 7 of 9 3-pointers in the second half and finished with 11 overall. Daniel Bennett scored a career-high 17 points and had five rebounds, while Daniel Landrum added 16 points and Alex Foster 10 points and four assists to pace KU. The Pelicans next face Enterprise of Redding, Calif., at 10:30 this morning. Enterprise lost 61-44 to Helix on Friday. Henley will face Newport, which defeated Burns in the tournament’s other first-round game.
