SOU softball sweeps Albertson CALDWELL, Idaho - The Southern Oregon University softball team banged out 30 hits en route to a Cascade Conference doubleheader sweep of Albertson College on Monday. The Raiders took Game 1 14-3, then clinched the sweep with a 7-0 victory. Angie Chaplin went 4-for-7 with six RBIs over both games, including two home runs, as SOU (20-4, 8-2) won for the eighth consecutive time. Freshman Haley Varley set an SOU school record by going 5-for-5 at the plate in the nightcap, while hurler Brandi Brown went the distance for her eighth shutout of the year, and added a three-run homer as well. Track & Field KLAMATH FALLS - Matt Young of Eastern Oregon and Kasey Jones of OIT topped the decathlon and heptathlon, respectively, after the first day of competition Monday in the Cascade Conference's Multi Event Championships at OIT. Young tallied 3,222 points in five events to build a seven-point lead over the rest of the men's field. OIT's Jared McGrath is second at 3,015. Southern Oregon's representative, Thad Gala, is sixth out of seven with 2,668 points. Gala sprinted the 100-meter dash in 11.64 seconds (second), soared 5.33 meters in the long jump (seventh), threw 8.58 in the shot put (seventh), cleared 1.49 in the high jump (seventh) and ran the 400 in 52.20 (first). In the four women's events, Jones accumulated 2,286 points to lead SOU's Kena Page (2,235) and OIT teammate Macy Campbell (2,174). Page finished the 100 hurdles in 19.34 (third), cleared 1.52 in the high jump (tied for first), heaved 9.26 in the shot put (second) and took 26.54 to run the 200 (first). Page has already qualified for nationals in the long jump, which is one of the three events remaining, along with the javelin and 800. Page was the Cascade's heptathlon champion two years ago.
