McCarty broke her own school record for 3-pointers in a game, canning six for all of her 18 points. As Rogue River’s pressing defense pestered Phoenix’s offense, the Pirates countered with a fast-paced attack, exploiting the outside. "When you’ve got a kid like Ashley who can shoot pretty well from the perimeter, we’re going to find some open shots," said Phoenix coach Kyle Walker. Advertisement The Pirates carried the momentum into the final two quarters. "We had pretty good defensive pressure in the second half," said Walker. Phoenix (14-6, 8-2 Skyline) also got a solid performance out of post Kat Cox, who raked in 16 rebounds. Cox’s well-rounded night included three blocks, three assists, three steals and six points. The senior post added 13 rebounds for a double-double. Illinois Valley’s man-to-man defense had an out-of-sync Lakeview (13-6, 7-3) reeling most of the night, with only Caitlyn Albertson reaching double-digits with 10 points. NORTH VALLEY 44, MAZAMA 31 — At Merlin, Skyline Conference leader North Valley turned up the defensive intensity in the second half after being tied 21-all at intermission. The Knights (11-4, 9-1 Skyline) held Mazama to just 11 points in the second half. Seniors Whittney Makepeace and Elaina Renius scored 10 of North Valley’s 12 points in the third quarter. Makepeace, who is playing through a shoulder separation, scored a game-high 14 points and spearheaded the Knights’ defense with seven steals. Renius added 12 points and 18 rebounds.
