Seems like a no-brainer to me. Easy for them to do, and sure saves sliced ‘n’ slivered fingers for consumers! Thanks if you can find out the answer. I’ve asked two companies over the ’Net, to no avail. — Patti I., Medford At least part of your question is easily explained, Patti. It turns out that less-than-complete slicing is part of the definition of English muffins. These griddle-baked soft yeast breads are supposed to be split with a fork, never sliced with a knife, according to "The Food Lover’s Companion" by Sharon Tyler Herbst. Fork-splitting the muffins — which admittedly sounds like a pain — is supposed to create "the proper peaks and craters" for holding melted butter and jam, according to food guru Herbst. Advertisement As for the practice of only partially splitting bagged bagels, well, we at Since You Asked Central are stumped. The only information we can find on sliced bagels involves a wide range of contraptions designed to protect people who apparently find handling a knife too difficult in the morning.
