Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Apr. 23, 2015 at 12:01 AM Posted Apr. 23, 2015 at 12:01 AM » Social News April 23, 1915 NO CLUES TO BANK ROBBERY AT ROGUE RIVER The Rogue River State Bank of Rogue River was robbed Thursday afternoon shortly after 3 o'clock of $800 in gold, after Cashier E.R. Roser had been rendered unconscious by the powerful fumes of spirits of ammonia, hurled into his face by a bandit. The robber, himself in danger of being overcome by the drug he used to consummate his crime, grabbed a tobacco can containing the loot and departed as he came — by the back door. Between $500 and $600 was overlooked. The criminal adventure was enacted with the precision of a moving picture scene. The loss is covered by bank insurance. Thinks Two Implicated It was first presumed that but one man took part in the robbery, but Cashier Rosser said this morning that he had a presentiment that two men were in the bank. He was balancing the bank books for the day when the feeling possessed him that someone was standing behind him, caused him to lift his eyes from his work to investigate. A man was standing before him. Before he could say a word or make a move, the ammonia was hurled into his face. He was rendered helpless instantly. The robber or robbers quickly gathered their swag and escaped, no one seeing them enter or leave. Half an hour later, Rosser regained consciousness and spread the alarm. Sheriff Singler and Deputy Wilson of this county sped in an auto to the scene. A telephone call to Grants Pass brought Sheriff Smith and deputies, who searched the surrounding country without results. It is believed that the robber or robbers are in biding waiting for an opportunity to make their way out. Warned Beforehand The robbery of the bank was not entirely unexpected by the authorities, and Cashier Rosser had been warned to take precautions. Two weeks ago the sheriff's office was told a plan was being formed to rob the bank. This information came from a transient , who claimed that he had been invited by two yeggs to participate in the robbing of the bank, explaining that ammonia would be used. The robbery, strange to say, was negotiated just as the authorities were told it would, except as to time.
