Al Lamont Daniels, 26, Brian Keith Yancy, 27, and Mario Roshun Vital, 24, are charged with numerous crimes in connection with the June 22 break-in at a Wagner Creek Road residence in Talent. Their trial is scheduled to run through Thursday in Jackson County Circuit Court. Yancy, of Ashland, and Vital, of Oakland, Calif., are accused of entering the house, beating the male resident with a tree branch and stealing a safe. They tied up the 22-year-old man and his girlfriend and fired two shots inside the home with a handgun before leaving, investigators allege. The two have pleaded not guilty to charges of attempted aggravated murder, first-degree robbery, assault and burglary, second-degree theft, fourth-degree assault and two counts each of first- degree kidnapping and menacing. Daniels, of Ashland, is suspected of luring the male victim’s father away from the property to help him fill a car with gas, investigators said. After driving off in a gold Mercury Sable, Daniels returned to pick up Vital and Yancy, investigators believe. He faces charges of first-degree robbery, first-degree burglary and second-degree theft. Trial dates have been postponed several times because attorneys weren’t prepared. If convicted of attempted aggravated murder, Yancy and Vital would spend a minimum of 10 years in prison. The robbery, assault and kidnapping charges carry prison terms of seven years and six months under Oregon’s mandatory sentencing law. Vital also has been charged in the separate June robbery of a Dutch Bros. coffee stand in west Medford. He is scheduled for a March trial in that case. Investigators allege Vital went to the Old Jacksonville Highway drive-up stand at about 10 p.m. on June 18 and struck up a conversation with the 16-year-old female barista. The robber then pulled a silver handgun and demanded money from the cash register, detectives said. After Vital’s arrest in the Talent robbery, police realized the general appearance and age of the silver handgun used in that case bore a resemblance to the coffee-stand heist, said detective Dan Hobbs of the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department. The Dutch Bros. employee was called to the sheriff’s office, where she picked out Vital from a line-up as the coffee-stand robber.
