Straight-ahead bluegrass Jackstraw adds new energy to traditional bluegrass and American music Acoustic bluegrass recording group Jackstraw is taking the sounds of old-time bluegrass and American music and turning them into fresh new tunes filled with vocal harmonies and high-energy finger-pickin'. Jackstraw will perform at 9:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 8, at Johnny B's, 35 S. Bartlett St., Medford. The Portland-based group features Darrin Craig and Jon Neufeld on guitars, David Pugh on mandolin, Jesse Withers on bass and Danny Barnes on banjo. The members play a mix of original and traditional music, and the lead vocals move away from the high, lonesome sounds of the old traditional artists to an earthier edge. The group's newest recording, "Rubber Wheels," was released in 2005; a live CD taped at The White Eagle in Portland was released the same year. A 1998 debut release, "Home Far Away," is now out of print, and "The Farrington Sessions" and "Jackstraw" were released in 2002. The group formed in 1997 and has appeared at events such as the Telluride Bluegrass Festival in the San Juan Valley in Colorado, the Bluegrass on the River festival in Arizona and the High Sierra Music Festival in California.
