Mail Tribune / Andrew Mariman Fiegi sinks SOU with basket in waning seconds ASHLAND — The hometown hero came through in the clutch, but unfortunately for the Southern Oregon University men’s basketball team, Eric Fiegi plays for Corban College. The former South Medford High all-star and NAIA All-American senior center’s 10-foot lean-in jumper with 2.9 seconds remaining lifted the Warriors to a 53-52 upset of the ninth-ranked Raiders at McNeal Pavilion Saturday. Fiegi out-dueled SOU All-American power forward Shea Washington with a game-high 33 points and 20 rebounds and helped thwart the Raiders’ hopes for a second straight Cascade Conference regular-season co-championship. "Great players find ways to beat you in pressure situations, and that’s what Fiegi did tonight," Raider coach Brian McDermott said. "I thought we defended him as well as any team at this level could, but he just found ways to make shots." Instead, Southern Oregon (23-7, 12-6 Cascade) limps into next week’s eight-team postseason tournament as the No. 2 draw and will host Albertson College Wednesday evening hoping to snap a two-game slide. Advertisement The Warriors (16-13, 10-8 Cascade) won for the first time in Ashland since 2003 by coming back from a 50-45 deficit with 3:40 remaining and a 52-49 hole with 1:37 left. Fiegi pulled Corban within one on an inside jumper with 1:17 to go, and Raider post Jeff Williams missed a pair of free throws with 23 seconds left, helping set the stage for Fiegi’s heroics. Washington, who notched his 37th career double-double with 22 points, 14 rebounds and four blocks, missed a last-ditch 3-pointer from 40 feet as time expired. "Shea had a fantastic performance," McDermott said. "I don’t think this league will have as talented of a match-up inside with such skilled players for long time." Having suffered a disappointing, 73-70 loss to Concordia the previous evening that wrecked hopes for an outright regular-season crown, the Raiders sputtered to a season-low 31-percent shooting performance (20 of 64) and scored on back-to-back possessions only three times all evening. Despite the frigid clip, Southern Oregon bounced back from a 14-7 hole with an 11-0 run, and the teams battled to a 22-all halftime deadlock. The second stanza featured four ties and nine lead changes. Raider senior point guard Steve Farley finished with 13 points and seven rebounds in the losing cause, and Williams compiled seven rebounds and seven assists. Except for Fiegi and his 13-for-24 effort from the floor, only one Warrior scored more than five points (freshman Jason Braun with two first-half 3- pointers). Corban, which finished in a three-way tie for fourth place, takes on No. 3 draw Oregon Tech in its quarterfinal clash.
