Newmann lifts Eagles over Pels Prep roundup KLAMATH FALLS -- If it weren't for Mike Newmann, Klamath Union's baseball team might have earned its first two Southern Oregon Conference wins. The Eagle Point senior simply wouldn't allow that, however, lifting the Eagles to a doubleheader sweep of KU, 10-8 and 11-10, on Wednesday. Newmann laced a game-winning homer in the ninth inning of the opener, and then quieted the Pelican bats in the nightcap for his second win of the day as the Eagles improved to 3-1 in SOC play. Newmann hit two home runs in the first game for Eagle Point, breaking an 8-all tie in the ninth with a two-run blast. He came on in relief of both contests, picking up wins in each -- including striking out the side in the seventh to ice the nightcap. Klamath Union (1-15, 0-4 SOC) mounted comebacks in each game to keep it close, rallying from deficits of 6-0 in the opener and 8-2 in the nightcap. The Pelicans scored eight runs in the sixth to take a 10-2 lead in the second game, only to have the Eagles roar back behind a two-run single by Brian Strodthoff to reclaim the advantage.
