Grizzlies charge past Grants Pass ASHLAND - Hard-charging Ashland is on a run to the state playoffs in Southern Oregon Conference girls basketball. The Grizzlies, who were 0-2 in conference play to start the season, won their fourth game in their last six Friday with a 54-45 victory over Grants Pass. Ashland lost to the Cavers earlier this season. Junior post Marla Morin continued her hot shooting with a game-high 25 points for the Grizzlies, who led just 44-41 after three periods before pulling away in the fourth. "This was a game we pretty much had to win to stay in the playoff race," Ashland coach Stephanie Santos said. "We've improved so much since we played them last time. "When you've got four new starters, a freshman point guard (Alysse Carlson) and a new head coach, it takes some time to jell." Junior guard Stefanie Talbott added 10 points for the Grizzlies, who ran their season record to 8-10. "I'm just real pleased with the way the girls are stepping up and playing like they can," Santos said. Senior guard Alison Klingel paced the Cavers with 12 points but senior wing Megan Moon, the No. 7 scorer in the SOC with a 12.8 average, was held to just four. SOUTH MEDFORD 57, KLAMATH UNION 28 - At Klamath Falls, South Medford popped off a 20-2 run in the second quarter to seal a Southern Oregon Conference win. Klamath Union trimmed an 11-1 deficit to 16-9 early in the second quarter before the Panthers shut the door. Junior post Kirsten Gillingham led South Medford with 16 points and eight rebounds, while freshman wing Katie Singler added 14 points, six boards and five steals. Senior guard Whitney Grant chipped in 10 points for the Panthers. Megan Leppert scored 11 points for Klamath Union (3-12, 0-8 SOC), but the Pelicans shot only 7-for-41 from the field and were outrebounded 42-25 in the defeat. CRATER 75, NORTH MEDFORD 51 - Sarah Pool and Amy Denson combined for 47 points as third-ranked Crater remained undefeated in the SOC. North Medford (5-13, 2-6 SOC) trailed by only three points at the end of the first quarter, but the Comets (17-1, 8-0 SOC) outscored the Black Tornado 18-9 in the second period to go into halftime with a 37-25 lead. Pool, a senior point guard, tallied a game-high 26 points. Senior post Amy Denson added 21. North Medford was led by junior wing Brittany Hodges with 23 points. Kersten Mellbye had an outstanding shooting game for the Black Tornado. The 6-foot-2 junior post scored 14 points on 7-of-9 shooting from the field and grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds. Freshman point guard Kailey Bostwick was inserted into North's starting lineup and did a good job against the Comets' pressure defense. Bostwick had four assists, three steals and only three of North's 19 turnovers. Senior post Brianna Gentry scored six points off the bench and provided the Black Tornado an emotional lift. ROSEBURG 62, EAGLE POINT 38 - At Roseburg, Lindsey Heard put on a show in front of a group of University of Oregon women's basketball coaches scouting Roseburg's 6-foot-2 senior wing. Heard scored 23 points, including four 3-pointers, grabbed 14 rebounds and dished out four assists. The Indians (10-4, 7-1 SOC) shot 54 percent from the field, while Eagle Point was limited to 30 percent. Roseburg also won the battle of the boards, 33-20. Roseburg junior wing Jori Grady complimented Heard with 12 points, four rebounds and four assists. Ashley Curtis had 14 points and seven rebounds for Eagle Point (4-13, 1-7 SOC), and Alisa Lee had 10 points and eight rebounds. The Cavemen led 20-7 after one period and 39-16 at halftime as they cruised to their fourth straight victory and improved to 4-2 in the SOC and 12-3 overall. Sophomore guard Kerry Hall scored a game-high 15 points and 6-foot-8 senior post Joe Newton added 12 for the Indians, who moved to 5-1 in the SOC and 10-6 overall.
