Pool drains life out of Redmond with shooting photo by Andrew Mariman Sarah Pool Talented guard scores 21 points to lead No. 2-ranked Crater past No. 9 Redmond in a non-conference game By TED BURNHAM for the Mail Tribune CENTRAL POINT - The Crater High School girls basketball team may have won anyway, but it was brilliant shooting by Sarah Pool that guaranteed a 23-point victory over Redmond Saturday afternoon. Redmond, ranked ninth among 4A schools in the state, led by five points early in the game and trailed by just six well into the third quarter before the No. 2 Comets put the game away, 74-51. "We played just good enough defense to take the lead, then Sarah Pool totally took over," said Crater coach David Heard. Pool, who is bound for the University of California at Berkeley, was more modest about her accomplishments. "I think it was just my teammates getting me the ball," said Pool, who ended the night with 25 points and added seven assists. "And my legs got more into the game." The Panthers (6-1) are young and small - center Renae Steel is the sole senior and the only girl over 5-foot-10. Nonetheless, Redmond played as aggressively as any team Crater has faced, according to Heard. "They really disrupted us," he said. "They were quick and they were very physical." Steel led the Panthers with 15 points and tiny sophomore Darcee Perdue added 14 points and eight rebounds. "I can never fault their effort," Redmond coach Wes Owens said. "Crater is a great team. I was really proud of our team. We came close but we have some work to do." An early 3-pointer by Nicole Hudson and baskets by Perdue and Candice Miller helped Redmond jump out to a 7-2 lead. Crater's Addie Wiersma hit a basket and Katie Robertson scored twice in 30 seconds to even the score, 9-9. Baskets by Denson and Wiersma put the Comets up, 21-12 early in the second quarter and the Comets led, 34-25, at halftime. Steel hit two baskets and a free throw and Perdue added a 3-pointer to bring Redmond to within six points, 41-35, three minutes into the second half. Pool answered the call midway through the third quarter, scoring 11 points, including three 3-pointers, in the last four minutes of the quarter. The Comets started the fourth quarter with a 15-4 run, and ended the quarter with 23 points. The Panthers could only manage 10. Heard said the Comets were "rusty" but he was pleased with the result. "We weren't really clicking," he said. "But when you beat a team that was undefeated by 23, it's nice." Pool said the game will help the Comets prepare for the Lake Oswego Tournament, which starts the day after Christmas. "Redmond is a really tough team," Pool said. "They have a lot of great players who really hustle. It will help us later on." Heard said the Lake Oswego Tournament, with 32 teams and four games in four days, is similar to the state tourney. He said six of the state's best 10 teams will play. "We will know where we are at in the state after we get back," Heard said. Crater takes on Centennial at 7 p.m. on Wednesday in Lake Oswego.
