> By Sam Wheeler Mail Tribune September 10. 2014 8:46PM Blazes burn in Crater Lake National Park A pair of lightning-sparked wildfires are burning inside Crater Lake National Park, but they are not impacting park operations. Although both fires are being closely monitored, they are not being suppressed by firefighters.  The small Caldera fire is burning west of Rim Village on the inside wall of the caldera, while the roughly 16-acre Founders Day fire is burning in the northeast corner of the park, according to a press release from the National Park Service.  The fire burning inside the caldera is surrounded by natural barriers that are limiting fire growth, the release said, but firefighters will take action if it climbs out of the caldera. It was sparked by lightning on Aug. 13, the release said.  The Founders Day fire, sparked by lightning on Aug. 25 — the 98th anniversary of the founding of the National Park Service — is expected to grow during the weekend's predicted hot, dry and windy conditions, the release said.  Burning on the east flank of Timber Crater, the fire will only be suppressed if conditions warrant, the release said.  "The fire is being managed with multiple objectives, including the restoration of the natural role of fire within the wilderness," the release said. "The decision to manage the Founders Day fire for multiple objectives was based upon the fire’s remote location within the interior of the park, availability of local and national resources, summer rain received over the fire area, and shorter and cooler days associated with autumn."
