Lakeridge overhauls Crater in stretch run Prep basketball LAKE OWSEGO -- The scrappy young Crater Comets pushed No. 7 Lakeridge to the limit Saturday night before falling short of in their bid for a trip to the Class 4A state girls basketball tournament. Lakeridge went to the charity stripe 25 times in the second half, including 17 in the fourth quarter, en route to a 57-46 victory. Overall, the Three Rivers League runners-up ventured to the line 27 times compared to seven for Crater. The Comets went into halftime leading by five and feeling pretty good about their chances of an upset bid. "We played with a lot of heart," said Crater coach David Heard. "Our group is very young and they came out and played one of our best games." However, the Comets could not find an answer in the second half to senior Sabrina Scott. Scott has signed to played with Colorado and is considered one of the top five players in the nation. She used her abilities and 6-foot-3 frame to earn 15 free throw attempts, connecting 10 times. Scott paced Lakeridge with 24 points. Crater was led by sophomore post Jodi McLeod's 15 points and six rebounds. "It's tough to lose a game like this," said Heard. "We played so well and came very close to beating a very good team." Crater ended the season with a 15-10 record. NORTH VALLEY 41, MAZAMA 24 -- At Merlin, Ashley Enoch and freshman Allison Klingel did an outstanding defensive job on Mazama leading scorer Dena Young as North Valley (15-6) earned a spot in the Class 3A state playoffs. But first, North Valley will play at Henley on Tuesday in a Skyline Conference seeding game to determined the league's No. 2 and 3 seeds in the state sub-tournament. Enoch sparked the Knights with 11 points and eight rebounds, while Sarah Town added seven rebounds and six points. Not only did Klingel help hold Dena Young to four points, but the back-up point guard added six assists guiding the North Valley attack. McKenzie Clark also gave the Knights a lift off the bench with four points and four rebounds in the second quarter. MAZAMA (24) -- Teeples 10, Burk 6, D. CASCADE CHRISTIAN 43, LOST RIVER 39 -- At Merrill, No. 6 Cascade Christian defeated No. 9 Lost River for the second time in eight days to gain the Southern Cascade League No. 1 berth in next week's Class 2A state girls tournament at Pendleton. The Challengers (25-2) won despite hitting just 5-of-23 free throws in the fourth quarter and 9-of-31 for the game. "We should've been putting them away, but we couldn't hit our free throws," said Cascade Christian coach Loren King. "They fouled us a bunch and we couldn't connect. I'm not sure why we couldn't." Cascade buried 36-of-45 free throws in a 58-54 home victory over the Raiders (16-6) Feb. 20. "We usually shoot around 60 percent," King said. "It wasn't pretty." Cascade's Christine McCandless led a balanced scoring attack with 12 points, while Crystal Tait and Kelly Clarke added 11 each. Hollis Bailey led all scorers with 18 points for Lost River. The Challengers jumped in front 17-9 after one quarter before Lost River tied it 23-23 at the half. Cascade outscored Lost River 9-2 in the third quarter, slowing the pace down when Natalie Peck ran into foul trouble. "They swarmed all over her defensively," King said. " They weren't going to let her do much." King said Janelle Conley and Bethany Wolfer played key defensive roles for the Challengers. "The only kid that got loose on us was Bailey in the fourth quarter when she picked up eight points," King said. Boys HIDDEN VALLEY 40, NORTH VALLEY 38 -- At Murphy, Hidden Valley abandoned its customary man-to-man defense, switching to a zone to better deal with taller North Valley, and the strategy helped the Mustangs reach the Class 3A state playoffs. Hidden Valley (14-11) plays at Mazama on Tuesday in a Skyline Conference seeding game. The winner will host a state sub-tournament contest next Saturday, while the loser must play on the road. Hidden Valley forced 22 turnovers, including eight in the third quarter. Sam Jarrett connected on two of his four 3-point goals early in the third period to help North Valley grab a 23-17 lead. But the Mustangs finished the quarter with a 9-0 run, which proved to be the difference in the game. The Mustangs could only manage 5-of-11 free throw shooting in the final quarter, but Dereck Horning sank two with 18 seconds remaining to give Hidden Valley a 40-35 lead. Luke Gentry's trey cut the margin to 40-38 with eight seconds to go, then Hidden Valley turned the ball over with three seconds. Horning intercepted a length-of-the-floor pass to preserve the victory. Willy Isley led Hidden Valley with 16 points, while Jarrett paced North Valley with 12.
