The Comets won 11 of 13 matches Thursday en route to a 52-13 Southern Oregon Conference victory over North Medford. The dual meet marked the first action of the season for the Comets. Chris Platt notched one of only two wins on the mat for North Medford — the Black Tornado also picked up a forfeit — and he didn’t have things come easy. Platt, a third-place finisher at last year’s state meet, trailed Collin Brooks 2-1 after the first period of the 171-pound match before rallying for a 7-3 victory. "That was probably the match of the night," Crater coach Greg Haga said. "Platt’s one of the toughest kids in the state but Brooks hung with him the whole way." Advertisement Another featured bout came at 160, where the Comets’ Chase Maloney registered an 18-7 win over Ryan Folsom. Maloney won the state title last year at 152. Crater picked up falls from Jake Vizzini at 112, Bryon Kezer at 130, Will Smith at 140, Ron Lee at 189 and Cody Clark at 215. Haga singled out Devon Mauck, a Crater senior who posted an impressive 15-2 win over Tyson Weston at 135. "That’s a kid who has come up through the ranks," Haga said of Mauck. "Last year he didn’t make the cut to go to district after losing a challenge match, but he’s looking tough. He’s paid his dues." Boys Basketball ROSEBURG 66, CHURCHILL 57 — At Roseburg, Churchill took the early lead but Roseburg roared back to claim its fourth victory in as many games behind 17 points from senior post Jeff Stricklin and 13 from senior wing Steven Davis. Garrett Crinklaw bombed in a pair of 3-point baskets and scored 12 of his game-high 23 points in the first period as the visiting Lancers grabbed a 20-17 lead. But Roseburg cranked up its defensive effort in the second quarter to take a 38-31 halftime lead and methodically pulled away in the second half. Isaiah Smith and Myles Walkup added nine points each for the Indians. KLAMATH UNION 63, NORTH VALLEY 56 — At Klamath Falls, Seth Hughes poured in 24 points and made all six of his free throws in the fourth quarter as Klamath Union held off North Valley for a nonconference win. The Pelicans (1-2) led by 20 points midway through the third quarter but the Knights (1-2) used a 23-10 burst in the fourth to tighten the final margin. Daniel Bennett and Joe Hill each reeled in eight rebounds to lead Klamath Union. Andy Shannon scored 14 points and hauled in 22 rebounds for North Valley, while Anthony Spain scored 16 points — 12 coming on four 3-point goals — before fouling out with two minutes to play. Sager added 14 rebounds for the second-ranked Mustangs (5-0), who played without the services of Nick Hayter due to an ankle injury. Jordan Hayter added 10 points for Hidden Valley, which built a 44-17 lead by halftime and went to its bench early in the second half . Girls Basketball GRANTS PASS 55, THURSTON 30 — At Grants Pass, Ashley Franko scored a game-high 16 points and collected six rebounds to fuel Grants Pass to the nonleague victory. Franko, a 5-9 junior post, sank 7 of 11 shots from the field and also grabbed six rebounds as the Cavers moved their record to 2-0. Sophomore Brianne Hurst had four assists and two steals in her first varsity start at point guard for Grants Pass, which soared to a 20-4 lead after one quarter. The Lancers were 28-for-46 from the free-throw line — Roseburg made 17 in 29 attempts — to overcome a 34-percent (18-for-53) effort from the field. Shayla Corder scored 20 points to lead the Indians, while Corynn Jorgensen scored 15 points and snagged 15 rebounds and Hayley Buckbee had 11 boards.
