PREP WRESTLING Crater's Walters falls in TOC finals Eagle Point finishes seventh in stacked field Comment By Frank Silow Mail Tribune MailTribune.com By Frank Silow Mail Tribune Posted Jan. 25, 2015 @ 2:00 am By Frank Silow Mail Tribune Posted Jan. 25, 2015 @ 2:00 am » Social News Crater's Nate Walters just couldn't muster enough offense in the 145-pound finals at the Reser's Tournament of Champions Saturday at Liberty High in Hillsboro. The top-seeded Walters fell behind 2-0 in the first period and scored an escape point late in the third but dropped a 2-1 decision to senior Mitchell Willett of Redmond. Willett scored his points on a takedown midway through the opening period. In the second stanza, the Comet senior denied Willett an escape but couldn't counter for any points. Walters' performance, the best of any local wrestler, helped Crater to a 12th-place finish with 85 points in the 24-school invitational. "(Walters) was great," said Crater coach Greg Haga, who pointed out Walters had four pins to get into the finals. "He kept the pressure on real good. He just needs to work on capitalizing on opportunities that arise in the match." Eagle Point, which had three placers led by a third-place by senior James McCoy at 160, finished seventh (102). "It was our best performance of the year so far," Eagle Point coach Kacey McNulty said. "This is by far the toughest tournament in the state." McCoy, who lost in first match of the event on Friday, rallied back to defeat a two-time defending state champion and a current defending state champ. McCoy pinned Ben Gadbois of Scappoose in two minutes for one of his five pins in the third-place match. "(McCoy) was aggressive on top with his riding and just wrestled well," said McCoy. "Almost everyone in our lineup scored team points for us." The Eagles received a fifth place from senior Loren Denn (138) and senior Blaine Cloney was sixth (195). For Crater, freshman Zeth Brower took third (106) and Jason Comer, a senior, was fifth. Brower posted a 6-0 decision over Cole Morgan of Crook County in the third-fourth place match. "He did a good job battling a kid he beat earlier in the tournament," said Haga. "He was real solid and kept the heat on." Crook County won the tournament with 303 points and Roseburg was second (244.5).
