Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend October 29, 2005 Intersection at McAndrews, Crater Lake Avenue open The last concrete is poured, new traffic signals are running and the detours and cones are gone on Crater Lake Avenue and McAndrews Road in Medford. For the first time in three and a half months, motorists can drive through one of the city’s busiest intersections, and there’s no warning-orange in sight. And for the first time in years, it’s a smooth ride. The project replaced a worn-out, rippled asphalt surface with more durable concrete, expected to last 50 years. It also widened both streets to create double left-turn lanes on northbound Crater Lake Avenue and eastbound McAndrews Road. The intersection sees as many as 22,700 vehicles per day on Crater Lake Avenue, and as many as 24,700 on McAndrews. Cory Crebbin, public works director, said the LTM company completed the $2.2 million project, which began July 5, within the time the city allowed. Crebbin said this project will be unique because there are no sensors to trip signal changes, as with other busy intersections. The lights will be programmed during busy times, and the city will install cameras that will trigger an appropriate light change for approaching cars during lower-traffic times. Crebbin said lane striping won’t be done at least for 30 days. "You have to let the concrete cure before you can paint it," he said.
