Unlike a lot of well-known remarks that may or may not be apocryphal, that one seems to be on the money. Rogers was widely quoted as saying it in 1930 in Boston, and he certainly repeated the claim often enough in later years. Its veracity is another matter. H. Allen Smith, another noted humorist, begged to differ. Smith was a journalist, humorist and the author of "Hell in a Handbasket," "Low Man on a Totem Pole" and many other books. Smith said he was once covering a rodeo as a cub reporter when he approached Rogers and said it would be an honor if he would join Smith’s group for a moment.
