Medford schools opening for registration, orientation By VICKI GUARINO Classes still are weeks away, but Medford schools are opening to register students and introduce families to programs and services. And one school will fire up the barbecue to welcome families back to school. McLoughlin Middle School will host cook-outs next week as part of its orientation session. "The idea is to give parents and kids a good start on the year at Mac," said McLoughlin dean Rick Parsagian. Orientation will be Thursday for eighth-graders and Friday for seventh-graders. Besides lunch, students and families will get an introduction to classroom programs and staff, school operations through the site council and special services. Adults will be offered opportunities to volunteer in the school. Students will receive their class schedules, locker assignments and gym uniforms and have photos taken. Fees, which total $33.50, will have to be paid. Sessions are intended for new and returning students, Parsagian said. "They need to attend because there are a lot of things to do," he said. "They should be here." Hedrick Middle School also is hosting an orientation session on the same days. Both schools are following the same schedule. Eighth-graders whose names begin A-L: 10-11:30 a.m. on Aug. 26. Remaining eighth-graders: 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Seventh-graders on Aug. 27 should follow the same schedule. Middle school students who are new to the district and have not pre-registered for the fall should register 1-3 p.m. Monday and Tuesday. Elsewhere in the Medford district, elementary schools opened this week to register new students. Parents who will return their youngsters to the same school they attended last year do not need to register. Returning students will receive all necessary registration material and information on the first day of school, Sept. 7. Students new to Oregon schools must show proof of immunization against tetanus, diphtheria, polio, measles, whooping cough, rubella, mumps and Hepatitis B. Medford's two high schools will continue registering students through Aug. 27. An orientation session for new North students will be at 11 a.m. Sept. 2 in the auditorium. Orientation at South will be at 9 a.m. Sept. 3 in the auditorium. Additional information about registration and the start of classes for Medford's estimated 12,500 students is available at local school offices.
