It was the latter scenario when the Adrenaline squared off against the visiting NSS United 98 of Redding, California, on Day 2 of the Rogue Memorial Challenge at U.S. Cellular Community Park Sunday. And, oh my, did the Adrenaline put on a show under the sweltering sun in the final pool play match of the Boys U19 Cascade bracket. On Saturday, the RVT squad scored a 2-0 win over SOSA Notorious of Phoenix but followed that with a 1-1 tie against the Cascade Rush Steelheaders of Bend in a match that few on the Adrenaline sideline felt was on par with how they typically play. Needing a win or a tie to secure a spot in Monday’s championship final against NSS United 98, which was already in regardless of the outcome, the Adrenaline used a surge of three goals in a five-minute span to eliminate all doubt in a 4-0 triumph. “In the last game yesterday we didn’t play very good and tied the team 1-1 so we wanted to come out with extra intensity,” said Adrenaline attacker Stenley Graham. “We just wanted to score right off the bat today and get shots up early, and we did that.” Adrenaline playmaker Kyle Owings helped set the tone early after playing well off the midfield work of Colton Mannhalter, eventually breaking through the seam of the defense with some deft footwork before Owings tallied on a far post shot from about 12 yards from the left wing. With that, the seal was broken and then a barrage of goals followed as Graham scored a minute later after making a smart run to space that allowed Owings to find him in stride for an almost identical goal as the first one past diving United 98 goalkeeper Tyler Cochran. Three minutes later, Mannhalter intercepted a pass and took a few touches before again finding Graham streaking down the left side. Graham made a nice first touch to get clear of a closing defender, then rifled a low shot to the near post for an insurmountable 3-0 lead that left the Californians visibly frustrated. “Their combination play was phenomenal,” said NSS United 98 coach Keith Stewart of the Adrenaline attack. “They had really good give-and-goes and their overlapping runs were over the top and we were two or three steps behind pretty much the entire match.” Adrenaline carried that 3-0 lead into intermission and then Owings was taken down inside the penalty box during a run early in the second half. Under the pressure of good-natured heckling from his teammates on the sideline, Owings deposited the penalty kick into the corner of the net for the final tally of the afternoon. “They gave us a lot of space and we just had a lot of time to figure things out before we executed them,” said Owings of his team’s success Sunday. “And after those first two games, we’re starting to click and getting our chemistry back. It’s been a while since we’ve played together — almost a year — so it’s looking good right now.” Helping keep a clean sheet for RV Timbers goalkeepers Ryan Kelly and Brady Cooper, who each played one half, was an impenetrable back wall of defenders Coy Woods, Adair Garibay and Zane Stromberg. The three-back scenario was a departure from how the Adrenaline lined up Saturday but with injured personnel, Adrenaline coach Scott Owings felt it was the best approach for Sunday — and he certainly was supported in his decision by Stewart, who echoed his adversary in heaping praise on the Adrenaline back line for impacting play. “We thought that if they were able to manage that defensive back line,” said coach Owings, “then we were able to be free with everything else that we had. That allowed us to make our game go forward.” And forward was how it mostly went Sunday, with very little action on the Adrenaline’s defensive third thanks to tremendous communication and understanding of what needed to be done to break down the California club. “We were just keeping good possession of the ball and then our attackers and our wingers would just make diagonal cuts off that,” said Graham. “We have great passers on this team so it’s easy to find guys that are wide open and easy to put it in the back of the net when that happens.” It’s all just a continuation of a process that has been many years in the making for Adrenaline, which isn’t in the exact form it’s been in past years but is still seeking its fifth straight Rogue Memorial Challenge championship and seventh overall Monday. “Distribution and possession, that’s our game,” said coach Owings. “Everybody is a baller on the field and we like everybody to be comfortable with the ball, and that also allows us to elevate our passing game. Because they have good touch they can elevate their passing game as well so therefore we just get better possession.” In the U19 girls Cascade championship, Rogue Valley Timbers 99G Red will take on FC Salmon Creek Nemesis 98 White of Washington at 11 a.m. Monday at U.S. Cellular Field 10.
