The Panthers clinched a share of second place in the SOC standings Tuesday with 7-0 and 4-0 wins over Klamath Union. The twin bill had already been postponed twice due to inclement weather, and Tuesday wasn’t much better. "The wind-chill factor was very strong," said South coach Dan Marshall. "It was definitely a pitcher’s day over there." Hubbard went 3-for-3 for South (19-4, 9-3 SOC) in Game 1 with four RBIs and hit an RBI double in the nightcap. "She is just a pure hitter," Marshall said. "She has good pitch selection and hits well with runners on. She had a big day." Advertisement Jen Mendenhall pitched a gem, allowing only two hits while striking out eight with no walks. The junior is now 11-3 on the season. The Panthers put up three runs in the first and seventh innings in Game 1. Hubbard, Bethany Stousland and Marissa Towry all had RBIs in the first inning. In the seventh, Katie Kaufman singled in a run, and a batter later, Hubbard got her fourth RBI of the game. In Game 2, South Medford had only three hits but picked up a pair of unearned runs as Erica Corns and Stousland walked and scored on a pair of wild pitches. Hubbard and Jackie Chaplin hit back-to-back RBIs in the sixth for two more runs. Pitcher Jill Jeter had five strikeouts for South. "These games were huge for us," Marshall said. "We got out of the dogfight with North, Roseburg and Eagle Point. Now it’s just a matter of second or third for us." The fourth-ranked Comets (21-0) picked up a single run in the third inning, then took advantage of an error in the sixth to put three more on the board. Bittle picked up her 13th victory against no losses, while Amanda Bolsinger pitched well in defeat, holding Crater to five hits. The Pirates (8-14, 8-10 Skyline) moved into a tie with Mazama for fourth place. The top three teams from the conference advance to the state playoffs. Robyn Singleton went 2-for-3 to lead Phoenix. She drove home the game’s lone earned run with a sacrifice fly that scored Shonda George in the fifth inning.
