Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Apr. 7, 2015 at 10:00 AM Posted Apr. 7, 2015 at 10:00 AM »  Social News In this comical satire of musical theater genres, one classic story about an ingenue who can't pay her rent becomes five small musicals, each set in a distinct style of masters of the form: Rodgers and Hammerstein, Stephen Sondheim, Jerry Herman, Andrew Lloyd Webber and Kander and Ebb. The hilarious love letter to musical theater, smartly written by Eric Rockwell and Joanne Bogart, previews Wednesday, April 8, opens Thursday, April 9, and runs through May 17 at Oregon Cabaret Theatre, First and Hargadine streets, Ashland. Curtain is at 8 p.m.; 1 p.m. for Saturday and Sunday matinees. Tickets for the April 8 preview cost $21. The Saturday, April 11, performance will be a fundraiser for Friends of the Animal Shelter. Tickets to that show cost $45. Tickets for all other shows cost $35, $21 for bistro seating. Tickets and information are available online at oregoncabaret.com or by calling 541-488-2902 to reach the box office. The first story about the artless young girl who is threatened by her landlord as her leading man comes to her rescue is "Corn!" It's set in August in Kansas, in the way Rodgers and Hammerstein might have imagined it ... with defiant lovers and a dream ballet. Next, "A Little Complex" tells the story in the style of Sondheim: A landlord who is a tortured, artistic genius slashes the throats of his tenants because they don't appreciate his art. The Herman-inspired "Dear Abby" is a splashy star vehicle, while the Webber-esque "Aspects of Junita" is a rock musical with catchy themes borrowed from Puccini. "Speakeasy" moves the story to Chicago and tells it in the cabaret style of Kander and Ebb. "The Musical of Musicals (The Musical)" first opened in late 2003 at the York Theatre for a limited run in New York City. The show garnered rave reviews and was nominated for five 2004 Drama Desk Awards, including Best Musical. The New York Times wrote " 'The Musical ...' has real wit, real charm. It's great fun." With tickets in great demand, the York reopened the show. Valerie Rachelle directs the OCT production, and the show stars newcomers Andrea Hilbrant, Tony Carter and Philip David Black, and Laura Derocher, who graced OCT's stage as Sister Mary Amnesia in its 2013 production of "Nunsensations!" Set design is by Jack Shouse, emeritus artistic director of Pacific Conservatory of the Performing Arts, who does his first work for OCT. Kerri Lea Robbins is costume designer, sound design is by Tom Freeman and Kate Landon is lighting designer. Reservations are required for pre-show dinner and brunch. Appetizers, beverages and desserts are available without reservations. OCT offers discounts to groups larger than 10, and student rush tickets are available 30 minutes before curtain (subject to availability).
