Frost-led Hornets stomp tentative Chiefs ROGUE RIVER -- Rogue River was fired up for its Saturday afternoon matchup against Henley, the state's top-ranked Class 3A boys basketball team. Rogue River entered the Skyline Conference contest 1 games behind the Hornets. A victory would have pulled the Chieftains (9-7, 4-2 Skyline) even in the loss column. Problem was, the Chieftains might have been too keyed up. Henley blitzed Rogue River with a 23-2 outburst in the first quarter en route to a 61-39 victory. "We emphasized playing them for first place too much," Rogue River coach Jeff Carter said. "We felt the pressure in the first quarter. The kids came out real tense and an experienced team like Henley jumped on it. Every mistake we made Henley took advantage of." And the Chiefs made plenty, like 10 turnovers in the first three minutes. Henley went on a 17-0 run to open the game before Ron Wessels scored with about two minutes remaining in the period. Both Wessels, a 6-foot-6, 240-pounder, and Henley's 6-10 Tim Frost posted triple doubles in the game. Wessels had 17 points, 15 rebounds and 10 blocks, while Frost scored 27 points to go with 14 rebounds and 12 blocks. Frost scored 10 first-quarter points and had five blocks in the opening period. "(Frost) dominated Ron in the first quarter," said Carter. "Ron was tentative. After that, Ron settled down and played him even." Rogue River received a productive effort from Ryan Paxson, who contributed 11 points and 10 rebounds.
