Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend October 29, 2005 Klamath boots hard-luck Ashland ASHLAND — The snake-bitten Ashland High football team found yet another way to lose, and this one was even more painful than the last four. Alex Foster’s 35-yard field goal with 18 seconds left gave the Klamath Union Pelicans a 31-28 nonconference win over Ashland on Friday night before a stunned crowd at Walter A. Phillips Field. The come-from-behind victory represented KU’s first over Ashland since 1984. Foster’s boot, which barely cleared the crossbar, capped a 49-yard drive that began at the KU 33 with 47 seconds to go. Foster also helped set up the kick by catching a Tony Snyder bomb over the middle on the first play of the drive. "You gotta go back to what your coaches tell you — fundamentals, head down, kick through the ball," Foster said. "I knew I had the distance when I connected with it and it was right-center so it doesn’t get much better." Ashland’s Justin Meza led the Grizzlies with 129 rushing yards on 20 carries, while Aaron San Nicholas caught six passes for 91 yards. Klamath Union out-gained Ashland 406 yards to 378. Snyder was inconsistent, throwing four interceptions, but came up with big plays when the Pelicans needed them and finished with 298 yards passing. Advertisement Ashland, which dropped its fifth straight after a 4-0 start, went ahead 13-0 on Meza’s halfback option pass to Sam Littleton and led 21-20 late in the fourth quarter. Backed up deep in their own territory, the Pelicans (7-2) reclaimed the lead when John Saxton took a screen pass 91 yards to paydirt with 1:49 left. Foster’s two-point conversion pass to Sergio Jefferson made it 28-21, KU. Ashland responded with its best drive of the second half, a 56-yard march culminating with Sam Littleton’s 18-yard touchdown lob to San Nicholas with 55 seconds left. Jaxon Williams drilled the pressure-packed point-after to tie the game, setting up Foster’s heroics. The Grizzlies still had time for a miracle comeback after Foster’s kick and nearly pulled it off when Dylan Steeves took a reverse hand-off on the kickoff return and streaked down the sideline untouched until being pushed out of bounds at the KU 49. "We thought it was going to be an easy game (after going up 13-0) and then I think we let down and you gotta give those guys credit because they fought the entire time," Ashland head coach Charlie Hall said. "Part of turning the corner is learning how to win under pressure and right now we certainly don’t know how to do that." GRANTS PASS 14, CRATER 6 — At Grants Pass, two first-half touchdowns held up for Grants Pass (4-5, 3-2 SOC). The victory keeps the Cavemen’s hopes for a state-playoff berth alive. Grants Pass hosts North Medford in the final regular season game next Friday. Grants Pass scored both its touchdowns in the second quarter on a 1-yard run by junior running back Craig Dolmage and a 49-yard pass from quarterback Buddy Saxon to Spencer Fogelquist. Crater (4-6, 1-5 SOC) cut the margin to 14-6 on Cory Staniforth’s 1-yard TD run with 8:18 left in the fourth quarter. Charlie Reina gained 135 yards rushing to lead the Crater offense that amassed 165 total yards. Dolmage was the Cavemen’s leader with 78 yards on the ground and Saxon completed seven passes for 95 yards.
