Jackson County Fire District No. 3 and Mercy Flights were called to a White City home about 1 p.m. to rush an expectant mother to the hospital. They arrived just moments before the baby did, said Ian Kassab, a firefighter and paramedic. The mother-to-be, who has two other children, was waiting outside, he said. The emergency crews had just got her into the ambulance when the baby arrived at 1:10 p.m., he said. "It was pretty exciting," Kassab said. This was the third baby Kassab had delivered "in the field" in his 12-year career. It was a first for his fellow District 3 crewman Damon Hoffman, who has nine years experience. It was also a first for Mercy flights emergency medical technician Kathy Shaw, who was working with partner paramedic Keith Coddington. Kassab said the district gets two or three calls to help women in labor each year, but the need to delivery a baby only comes up every few years. The healthy new arrival and her mom were taken to Rogue Valley Medical Center. Patient privacy rules prevented the release of the names of mother and child.
