The scoring kicked off in the 20th minute when Emily Gross delivered a crossing pass from the wing position to sophomore Justine Lawson, who deposited the ball into the net from 35-yards out for North’s first score. Gross dealt another assist eight minutes later to senior Caitlin Seeley, who scored on a header in the box. Crater came out strong in the second half and managed to get the majority of its shots in the final period, but the Comets were outshot 27-12 overall. Helping keep the Comets at bay were North defenders Jennifer Standifer and Lisa Louie and senior goalkeeper Katy Kunkle as the Tornado (2-0 SOC) posted its second conference shutout. Advertisement "It was a lot of banging and grinding in the second half," said North coach Dick Darcy, "but we held on and kept them out." SOUTH MEDFORD 6, KLAMATH UNION 1 — At Klamath Falls, South Medford’s Jill Walport led off both halves with a goal to set the pace as the Panthers pummeled the Pelican net. Walport fired a low shot from the right side five minutes in off a pass from Jessica James. In the 23rd minute, Alanna Stevens scored on a follow-up after her initial shot failed to find the net. Five minutes into the second half, Walport added her second goal off an assist by Kaylyn Knutson. Klamath Union retaliated two minutes later when Claire Edwards dribbled the ball within 18 yards of the goal and fired a shot past South keeper Bethany Stousland. Chelsie O’Neill assisted Emma McConnell in the 59th minute and Heather Brownlee scored in the 70th off a header pass from Alanna Stevens. Kelsey Corbin closed the scoring for South with a 35-yard goal in the 73rd minute. GRANTS PASS 6, ASHLAND 1 — At Grants Pass, Courtney Cameron scored two goals and assisted on another to lead the Cavers in a rout over Ashland. Cameron caught a pass from Loraine Cruz and dribbled past the Grizzlies’ goalie for her first score. Grants Pass (1-1) failed to convert a corner kick, but Cameron was there to score on a second-effort. Sheila Lindquist scored the Cavers’ first goal on a steal, Ally Pepperling headed in a goal in the second half and Cruz added a goal to open the second half on an assist from Megan Cardiff. Sylvia Van Osdal converted a penalty kick for Ashland (0-2 SOC), and Krista Krug had three saves in goal for Grants Pass. ROSEBURG 6, EAGLE POINT 0 — At Roseburg, SOC all-star Carli Godard scored two goals and added an assist to help Roseburg (2-0 SOC) take a 4-0 halftime lead. Sophomore forward Julie Piper got the Indians rolling with goals in the sixth and 21st minutes. Godard, a senior forward who had a team-high 10 goals last year, scored Roseburg’s next two goals to give her three on the season. Michelle Davis and Beth David tallied for Roseburg after intermission. Eagle Point dropped to 0-2 in conference action. SOC Boys SOUTH MEDFORD 4, KLAMATH UNION 0 — Scotty Marlow stole the show in the first half for South Medford with two unassisted goals and the Panthers pitched a shutout at Spiegelberg Stadium. Marlow scored in the sixth and 16th minutes on nearly identical shots to the far post to put the Panthers ahead 2-0 in their Southern Oregon Conference opener. Chris Mendoza assisted Bret Hamilton in the 66th minute with a centering pass from the right, and Oscar Aldena capped the scoring with an unassisted shot from the right flank. NORTH MEDFORD 4, CRATER 0 — After losing to Crater the past two years, North Medford came out strong against the Comets at Hoffbuhr Field. Luis Cabrera scored the first of three Black Tornado opening-half goals just over one minute into the match off an assist from Max Brown. Brice Walters gave North a 2-0 lead off another assist by Brown in the 15th minute. Matt Harris completed the first-half scoring on a header with an assist by Michael Servoss. Eric Howe scored the final goal in the 78th minute off a Matt Harris corner kick. Oscar Benitez recorded his second shutout of the season in the net for North. The Black Tornado denied the Comets (0-2) a shot on goal in the first half and finished with a 15-5 shot advantage. ASHLAND 1, GRANTS PASS 0 — At Ashland, Thomas Golding’s athletic goal midway through the second half proved to be all the scoring Ashland needed. The winning goal came about when Grants Pass (1-1) got caught in transition off its own free kick in the Grizzly zone. Ashland attacked up the right side and Fabian Garcia-Flores provided a crossing pass which Golding headed into the net. The Cavemen missed an opportunity about five minutes earlier when Adam Ortiz hit the post on a one-on-one opportunity with the Ashland goalkeeper.
