Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend October 30, 2005 Hass in no mood to celebrate milestone after shocker Beaver Notes By CLIFF KIRKPATRICK for the Mail Tribune CORVALLIS — The beleaguered, weary expression on Mike Hass’ face after Saturday’s shocking 29-27 loss to Arizona at Reser Stadium perfectly described how he felt about breaking Oregon State’s career record for receiving yards. It’s not anywhere near as meaningful if winning doesn’t accompany personal accomplishment. Hass broke the yardage record on a 21-yard reception midway through the fourth quarter. His accomplishment was detailed on the JumboTron and the game was stopped momentarily for the Homecoming crowd of 40,759 to acknowledge his feat with a sustained ovation. "That was nice, for sure, but it doesn’t feel as good as it should at this point," he said, since it came in a crushing loss that seriously endangers OSU’s chances for a fourth consecutive bowl appearance. Hass had 11 receptions for 190 yards on Saturday to surpass former teammate James Newson’s OSU yardage record. Hass has 3,629 career yards; Newson had 3,572 yards from 2000-03. Advertisement Hass also moved past Newson, Washington’s Reggie Williams and Arizona State’s Derek Hagen into second place on the all-time Pac-10 list behind Stanford’s Troy Walters (4,047). He likewise drew considerably closer to Newson on OSU’s all-time receptions list. Newson had 213; Hass now has 199. He could break Newson’s mark during the Nov. 12 home game against Stanford if he has an average eight- or nine-catch game at Washington next Saturday. He and Newson are still tied for career receiving touchdowns with 20 apiece. "He’s the man," OSU quarterback Matt Moore said. "Mike’s a leader, always making plays, day in and day out, every week." Hass ranks 12th in Pac-10 career receptions. He passed Craig Bragg of UCLA (193), Brad Muster of Stanford (194) and Dameane Douglas of Cal (195) on Saturday; next to pass are USC’s Johnnie Morton (201), Kareem Kelly (204) and Keary Colbert (207). TOUGH DAY: Beaver quarterback Matt Moore had seven turnovers, including six interceptions, and coach Mike Riley considered taking him out at the end of the first half for his own mental well-being and to begin the calming process. But when Moore came out so strong in the second half with three scoring drives, Riley stayed with him. "I’m not looking for a hook for Matt," Riley said. "A lot of it today was making a bad choice, trying to make something happen that’s not there." And for the record, there’s no quarterback controversy.Riley said Moore is still the starter going into next week. Backup Ryan Gunderson has played well in mop-up roles this season, but he didn’t even warm up during the game. And since backups are always considered better than the starter in times like this, Moore is ready for criticism. "What can I do?" Moore said. "I just have to take it. I would probably do the same thing. I’m just going to sit here and take it." WHO’S HOT: Sophomore running back Yvenson Bernard, who ran for 192 yards. He had 220 total yards and two touchdowns and has become OSU’s most consistent offensive player. Bernard scored his 11th and 12th rushing touchdowns of the year, moving him into a tie for seventh on OSU’s single-season record list with Pete Pifer (1966). He needs seven more to catch leaders Ken Simonton (1999) and Steven Jackson (2003). Bernard is 10 yards shy of 1,000 for the season. He ranks 11th on OSU’s single-season yardage list. WHO’S NOT: The Beavers’ pass defense, which allowed many of Arizona’s 335 passing yards in big chunks. A true freshman quarterback found receivers wide open for touchdowns of 75 and 68 yards. THE SERIES: Arizona snapped OSU’s six-game winning streak in the series and leads 20-8-1 all time. That streak by the Beavers had been their longest against a Pac-10 opponent since defeating Oregon eight straight from 1964-71. RARE PLAY: Arizona strong safety Michael Johnson returned an interception for a 40-yard touchdown in the first quarter — Arizona’s first defensive touchdown of the year.
