Mail Tribune / Roy Musitelli Henley in the hunt Hornets in control after qualifying 15 athletes for today’s finals at the Skyline Conference district meet By ROB MCCALLUM Mail Tribune ASHLAND — Hidden Valley and Phoenix had above average performances on the first day of the Skyline Conference track and field meet Friday at Southern Oregon University. But it may not make a difference in the end. The meet concludes today, with field events starting at 11 a.m. and running events at 1 p.m. The Mustang boys lead the competition with 48 points, followed by Henley with 45.5 and Phoenix with 37.5. Advertisement "I was figuring that we’d be the leaders by the end of the day," said Hidden Valley coach Stan Goodell. "But Henley has depth and outstanding athletes. I don’t see anybody stopping them. We’d like to win the thing, but I’m realistic. If we can hang on for second, I’d be happy." In running events, Henley qualified 15 athletes to today’s finals — at least one runner in every event and all three entrants in four events. "Henley is going to be very strong," said Phoenix coach Hans Voskes. "They have some incredible depth. What we’re trying to do is nickel-and-dime them." On the girls’ side, Mazama leads the competition with 37 points, nine ahead of Henley. Phoenix and Rogue River stand at fourth and fifth, respectively. Hidden Valley jumped out to its early lead behind a record-breaking vault from Ryan Musselman and a winning throw from Matt dePuglia. Musselman broke a 14-year-old meet record, clearing 15 feet, 4 inches, resulting in an eruption of applause at Raider Stadium. "I love to vault with huge crowds," said Musselman, who narrowly missed on three attempts at 15-7. "It always makes me jump higher." Musselman will now set his sights on the Class 3A state record of 16-7 at next week’s state championships in Eugene. Teammate Jordan Hayter was the runner-up and will join Musselman at state. dePuglia won the discus with a toss of 142-6¾ and also placed in the long jump. Phoenix came up with several upset wins. Senior Adam Chizek gave the Pirates their fourth straight Skyline champion in the 3,000 meters, winning in 9:35.48. "It was a lot of fun to have a breakthrough race," Chizek said. "I’ve been sick a little this season and haven’t had a chance to get a good race in. It feels good." Chizek sat in fourth place for six laps behind Lakeview’s Ryan Tague and favorite Scott LeRoy of Henley. At the bell lap, Chizek made a move no one could answer and won by a comfortable margin. The race was especially satisfying for Chizek, who for the past four years has run in the shadows of Phoenix standouts Nathan May, Lalo Flores and Kyle Gillette, who enters today with the top mark in the 800. Phoenix’s Brian Bones and Henley’s Skylar Morgan each cleared 6-3 in the high jump, but Bones was named the winner based on fewer misses. "Everybody came through today," Voskes said. "Both Brian and Adam gave us pleasant surprises." Another tie came in the long jump, where Mark Hiler and Mike Pagnotta both had best marks of 21-4, but Hiler won the tiebreaker because his next-farthest jump bettered Pagnotta’s. The Mazama girls got off to a good start when defending 3,000 champion Jasmine Klauder outdueled Arika Phillips of Phoenix, winning in a personal best time of 11:08. Phillips will make her first trip to state after running second in 11:16. Rogue River sophomore Danielle Holmes won the shot put with a toss of 37-2½ , almost a foot past the No. 2 mark from Hidden Valley’s Anja Crawford. Illinois Valley two-sport athlete Kim Hamilton used her pitching arm to win the javelin with a toss of 112-2. Hamilton also placed second in the long jump. In preliminaries, North Valley’s Jeremiah Lewman qualified with top marks in the 100 and 300 hurdles and the No. 2 mark in the 110 hurdles, seven- hundredths behind Morgan. Defending 400 state champion Dan Martin of Henley has the top times in the 400 and 200. Rogue River’s Shannon Jentzsch gained some momentum going into today’s pole vault competition, earning the top seed in the 100 hurdles and the second-best mark in the 300 hurdles. "It was nice to get good times," said Jentzsch, who will cap a busy Saturday by running a leg on the Chieftains’ 4x400 relay team. "I try to focus on whichever event I am doing at the time." A notable performer missing from the meet was Lakeview’s Ryan Nash, a four-event winner in 2003, out for the season with an abdominal strain.
