Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend April 7, 2005 South outlasts GP in nonconference softball GRANTS PASS — South Medford pitchers Jen Mendenhall and Jill Jeter teamed up to one-hit Grants Pass during a 1-0 victory in nonconference softball Wednesday. The Panthers (7-2), who had only two hits themselves, broke up a scoreless tie in the fifth inning. Desiree Millette walked and stole second, then came home on a Jonni Byrne RBI single up the middle. Millette just slid under catcher Jennifer Dolmage’s tag at the plate to put South ahead for good. Mendenhall struck out eight in four innings of work to notch her fourth victory. Jeter fanned six in three innings to record the save. Freshman Chelsea Chamberlain pitched well in defeat for the Cavers, who fell to 7-2. The Loggers (1-5) led 11-6 after three innings and added four more in the fourth to pull away for the five-inning victory. The game was limited to five innings because of a time limit. Baseball SOUTH UMPQUA 5, ROGUE RIVER 2 — At Rogue River, South Umpqua scored five runs in the fifth inning of a nonconference game to hand Rogue River its first loss. The Chieftains (7-1) had several opportunities, loading the bases in the second inning and putting runners on second and third in the fifth, but couldn’t get the timely hit. Spencer Frantz hit a solo home run in the third to stake Rogue River to a 1-0 lead and Alex Waroff provided an RBI single in the sixth. Gary Richardson led Rogue River with two hits. Kyle Campbell recorded his second pitching win against one loss and Zeigler went 2-for-2 to lead the Challengers, now 2-4 overall. Illinois Valley had scored a run in the bottom of the seventh to send the game to the extra frame.
