PREP SOCCER Owings hat trick ignites South Medford Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Nov. 1, 2015 at 2:00 AM Posted Nov. 1, 2015 at 2:00 AM » Social News Kyle Owings didn’t leave much to chance in South Medford’s Class 6A boys soccer first-round playoff game Saturday. The prolific Panther scored South Medford’s first three goals in a 6-1 romp past North Salem at South Medford High. The Southwest Conference champion Panthers (10-1-4) will travel to Portland on Tuesday to take on fourth-seeded Lincoln High (13-2-1) in the second round of the playoffs. “My boys were fired up and ready to go,” said South Medford coach Josh Desmond. “They wanted to make a statement early.” And there’s no one better than the dynamic Owings to do that. In the sixth minute, the senior forward found the back of the net on a deflection off teammate Diego Rodriguez’s shot that hit the crossbar from 25 yards out. About eight minutes later, Owings was taken down in the box and converted the penalty kick to put the Panthers ahead 2-0. Owings struck again in the 35th minute on a through ball from Charlie Stringer. South wasn’t quite done in the opening half. Josue Reyes gathered in a free kick from Owings and booted in a goal from 12 yards away for a 4-0 advantage just two minutes before intermission. North Salem got some brief momentum with an opening goal of the second half from Juan Perez. The Panthers answered back with a pair of goals from backup Hersson Guitron, who scored on a header in the 60th minute and on a counter attack off a crossing pass from Owings with five minutes remaining. “Kyle is on a mission the win the state championship,” said Desmond. “He’s not just a goal scorer but an all-around player.” With the three goals, Owings now has 28 on the season. “Our defense played really well and we’re getting contributions from everybody,” said the South first-year coach. “We’re peaking at the right time.” CORVA LLIS 2, EAGLE POINT 0: At Eagle Point, Corvallis used a goal by Will Scoville in the 20th minute and another by Jose Lopez in the game’s final minute to deny Eagle Point in the Class 5A play-in game at Eagle Stadium. Sophomore Omar Escobedo made four saves for Eagle Point (8-6), which finished fourth in the Midwestern League. Also leading the charge against Corvallis (7-6-2) were senior midfielders Sebastian Tovar and Kevin Van Dyke MCLOUGHLIN 1, PHOENIX 0, SO: Phoenix failed to capitalize on its opportunities in suffering a Class 4A boys soccer shootout loss (5-3) to the No. 3 team out of the Greater Oregon League at U.S. Cellular Community Park. The eighth-seeded Pirates (9-5), the Skyline Conference runner-up, outshot McLoughlin 17-9 and owned more ball possession than the Pioneers (6-6-2) in the state play-in game. In the shootout, McLoughlin made all five penalty kicks while Phoenix missed its third shot. Phoenix received strong performances from junior center defender Joel Mereida-Ford and Carlos Camacho, a sophomore forward who paced the attack with five shots. Girls Soccer SOUTH MEDFORD 2, GRANT 1: Montana Logue headed in the winning goal with four minutes remaining as host South Medford recovered from an early mistake to derail Grant in the opening round of the Class 6A playoffs. The Panthers (9-4-2) will travel to third-seeded Sunset on Wednesday for the second round. After gathering the ball off a free kick, Renae Nisbet sent it in toward Logue, who jumped and directed it out of the reach of Grant’s goalkeeper from about 6 yards out. Logue also used her head to set up another header that tied the game 1-all in the 27th minute. She leaped to deflect the ball with her head across to Chloe Alvarez, who headed it in on the run to knot the score after Grant had tallied on an own-goal earlier by the Panthers. South Medford’s Maddy Eaton and Whitney Winans were outstanding in the field as well as goalkeeper McKenzie Kapp, who came up with four saves overall and a big stop off a Grant corner kick in the second half. WESTVIEW 1, NORTH MEDFORD 0: Westview’s Samantha Siems scored in the 10th minute and seventh-seeded North Medford was unable to recover with an equalizer to come up short in the first round of the Class 6A state playoffs at U.S. Cellular. North Medford (10-4-2), the Southwest Conference runner-up, possessed the ball for the majority of the game but couldn’t find the net against the visiting Wildcats (5-8-3), who finished fifth in the Metro League. Seniors Haley Janky, Haylie Durant and Sarah Thomas set the tone on the field for North Medford. LAKERIDGE 3, GRANTS PASS 0: At Lake Oswego, Lakeridge used an advantage in size and physicality to turn back Grants Pass under conditions with driving rain and on-field puddles in the first round of the 6A state playoffs. Grants Pass completed the season with a 6-6-2 record, while eighth-seeded Lakeridge (8-1-5) advances to Wednesday’s second round. The Pacers, the No. 3-team from the Three Rivers League, scored in the 23rd minute and used an own-goal by GP in the 37th to take a 2-0 halftime advantage.
