Are they returned to their families? What if there is no next of kin to bury the person? — Timothy B., Medford Once a medical examiner or physician pronounces the patient dead, the body is taken to a funeral home. Families or other individuals for which the inmate has requested contact in an emergency are notified and asked to make arrangements. If they do not wish to handle the burial, the state pays to dispose of the inmate’s remains after first using money deposited in the inmate’s prison account. Thirty-four inmates died in Oregon prisons last year. Illness claimed 29. Three committed suicide. One inmate died of AIDS-related complications, and the cause of another’s death is still pending.
