My question: Hasn’t it been a few years ago that we had a major project going on at the airport to install equipment so that we wouldn’t have this fog problem with the flights? Also, do they still "seed" the fog to break it up? — Jan J., Medford We’ll try to clear this up for you, Jan. Yes, new equipment was installed at the airport to deal with our foggy days. According to Airport Director Bern Case, the situation is about 70 percent better than it used to be. "There are still days when Mother Nature can shut us down," he said. The airport has had to temporarily stop operations on a half-dozen days this year, resulting in two cancellations and two delays. As to the equipment, Jan, the airport has installed new features, but whether a flight can negotiate its way through the fog also depends on equipment in the cockpit and the flight crew’s training. The airport does still "seed" the clouds, but it’s only effective below 32 degrees. Case said there hasn’t been any seeding so far this year.
