Alcohol usage subject of student essay contest Oregon students are asked to write about the future of alcohol use in an Oregon Liquor Control Commission essay contest. Winners in two middle and high school grade categories will receive $500 U.S. savings bonds. Runners up will get $300 and $200 bonds. In addition, winners will be invited to read their essays at the OLCC's annual awards ceremony Dec. 6 in Portland. "I predict that in the next century, alcohol use will be ..." is the focus of the contest. Writers should describe how they think alcohol will be used in the 21st century, when they are adults, voters, consumers, employees, employers and parents. Maximum length is 400 words. Students will compete in a grades 7-9 category, and grades 10-12 category. Entries will be judged by the state's writing assessment system which evaluates compositions for ideas, content, organization, voice, effective word choice, sentence fluency and writing conventions. Essays may be handwritten neatly, or typed, on one side of the page. The writer's name, address, telephone number, grade level and school name must appear at the top of the essay. Contest deadline is Oct. 29. Entries must be post marked by that date to be eligible. Essays should be sent to: Essay Contest, OLCC, post office box 22297, Milwaukie, 97269-2297.
