Ilo and Melissa Ferroggiaro, the couple petitioning to overturn Klamath County’s marijuana sales ban, turned in their first batch of 996 signatures to the clerk’s office Thursday. The Ferroggiaros, owners of medical marijuana dispensary Laughing Lotus Farms, need the clerk’s office to certify 914 of those signatures for the item to make it on the May 2016 ballot. The clerk’s office has 15 days to certify the signatures. If not enough make the cut, the Ferroggiaros have until Dec. 22 to gather more. The petition asks voters to compel the county to adhere to state statutes regulating marijuana businesses in place of a ban. On Sept. 22, all three commissioners — Tom Mallams, Jim Bellet and Kelley Minty Morris — voted in favor of banning marijuana processing, producing, dispensing and wholesaling, as well as medical marijuana dispensaries. “All this referendum does is put the authority back into the hands of the people as far as medical cannabis and recreational cannabis for Klamath County,” Ilo Ferroggiaro said. “I think it also shows them how much the town is behind this, instead of the views expressed by just the three people on the commission board.” Though they turned in this first batch of signatures, they said they are not done gathering. The Ferroggiaros will continue until the clerk’s office says they’ve made the 914-count threshold. “You don’t know how many they’re going to go and invalidate,” Melissa Ferroggiaro said. “It’s better to have more than need more.” Her husband noted they still need to pick up petitions in the northern part of Klamath County, including in Fort Klamath and Chiloquin. When asked how it feels to turn in the signatures, Melissa said, “Awesome.” “Pretty good,” Ilo echoed. The Ferroggiaros also have filed a recall petition against Mallams.
