Myers sets Medford record in shot put North Medford senior Scott Myers continued his assault on the record books on a blustery Tuesday afternoon at Bowerman Field. The persistent northwest wind that rattled some field event competitors and created an invisible wall for runners failed to hamper the 6-foot-1, 250-pound Myers as he tossed a 12-pound iron ball farther than any Medford shot putter in local prep history. Myers surpassed Randy Settell's 1983 Black Tornado standard of 60-feet, 93/4-inches not once, but twice as North eased past Crater, 941/2-461/2, in a Southern Oregon Conference dual meet. North also won the girls meet, 89-51. In the preliminary round, Myers uncorked a 61-8 throw to surpass his own previous best of 57-10 launched March 13 and Settell's record. Then in the finals, Myers hit 60 feet on his first throw, and scratched on the next throw that was estimated at 62-5. Not done yet, Myers next matched the best throw ever by an SOC performer when he uncorked a mammoth 62-11 toss. That tied him with Roseburg's Heath Howington for No. 5 on the all-time Class 4A list. "The thing I like about Scott is that he's not focused on marks, he's focused on learning his craft," North Medford coach Mark Hodges said. "The marks are coming by themselves. "This is the first year he's gone to the spin. Because of his quickness the natural progression was to go from the glide to the spin. He's gaining so much speed because he's so fast across the ring, but he's got a real good amount of control." Not to be overlooked was Justin Baehman's 53-21/2 effort for North - 31/2 inches off the state qualifying mark - for second place. Crater's Chris Dearmon, who finished second in last year's SOC district meet, was third with a 52-9 effort. "Baehman is knocking on the door for state qualifying," Hodges said. "Dearmon is a big, strong kid. Any time you are able to defeat Dearmon, who has been Mr. Consistency, that's a feather in your cap." Myers also twirled the discus 164-9 as the Tornado boys won 13 of 17 events. The foursome of Justin MacLauchlan, Matt Parish, Dustin Brooks and Alan Borelli clocked a season's best 43.6 effort in the 4x100 relay. North's previous best this spring was 44.2. "It was the same group as we had last week," Hodges said. "But our handoffs really improved." In girls competition, Kendra Mitchell challenged the North Medford long jump record with a 16-6 effort. Mitchell and Emily Dunn are now ranked Nos. 2-3 behind Roseburg's Jennifer Lint in the SOC this spring. On a day when good times were hard to come by on the track, Brittany Hodges was timed in 26-flat in the 200 meters.
