Inside, the tiny deli at 201 W. Main St. in Medford has no tables, just room for a few customers to stand, a counter and space for owner Susan Morgan to make her tasty sandwiches, soups and specials of the day while an assistant rings up orders. Good 2 Go Deli has a loyal following among downtown workers who appreciate healthy, high quality and affordable food served with a smile. "I've had to adapt to the neighborhood," Morgan says. "There are a lot of nonprofits downtown. I have to cater to that. I'd rather have people eat here a lot rather than as a special occasion. It's fast food that is healthy. You can get in and out quickly and get good, fresh-made food." Good 2 Go Deli's staple menu item is sandwiches. Customers can pick from a variety of quality breads, hand-sliced meats, cheeses and a garden's worth of vegetables. Offerings include turkey, ham, pastrami, roast beef, tuna, chicken salad and egg salad. A half sandwich is $3 and a whole is $5.75. My favorite is the turkey sandwich on whole grain bread piled with vegetables. I often round out the meal with a $1 bag of chips and a freshly steeped $1 medium tropical iced tea, which has a hint of fruity flavor. The deli also has soda and regular iced tea. The selection of soup, which costs $2.25 for a cup or $3.75 for a bowl, changes daily. The piping hot clam chowder is filled with tasty morsels of clam and chunks of potato, while the tomato basil is hands-down the best tomato soup I've ever tasted. Bits of real tomato float in a creamy mix that somehow manages to taste more like a calzone or pizza than mere soup. The filling, protein-rich chili has a generous amount of hamburger mixed in with the beans. Somehow in the tiny space, Morgan also manages to offer hot daily specials. Monday features baked potatoes for $4.50 that come loaded with your choice of butter, sour cream, bacon, cheese and green onions. The most popular special of the week is Taco Tuesdays, when $2 soft tacos, $4 burritos and $6 taco salads pop up on the menu. Once the tacos run out, they're gone, so it's best not to put off lunch for too long on Tuesdays. Wiener Wednesday showcases all-beef and Polish hot dogs for $4, and chili dogs for $6. Thursday is another not-to-be-missed day, with pulled pork sandwiches for $3 for a half and $6 for a whole. The tender pork is marinated in a sweet barbecue sauce, topped with coleslaw mixed with bits of apple and served on a soft roll. This is high-quality pork, not highly processed mystery meat loaded with fat. Thursday also happens to be tomato basil soup day. During warm months, French dip sandwiches are the Friday special, while Greek-style gyros are served during cold months. Morgan roasts ground beef and lamb with Greek seasonings on a rotisserie in the deli, then serves it on flatbread. A small refrigerator holds grab-and-go salads and breakfast burritos that Morgan can warm in the microwave. Other quick items include coffee, muffins and candy bars. Formerly a manicurist, Morgan opened the deli when the recession hit and her clients could no longer afford to get their nails done. In her first year, she worked at the deli by day and did nails by night. "That was a rough year," she recalls. Eventually she built up her loyal customer base and was able to go to work full-time for herself. "It's a neighborhood corner place where people can get food. I like my customers. Most come here daily," Morgan says. "I like our little neighborhood." Good 2 Go Deli is open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays.
