By JONEL ALECCIA Mail Tribune At ages 14 and 16, the two boys from Phoenix were old enough to know their mother didn’t deserve to be hurt. So when their father exploded in a violent rage recently, they stepped in to stop him. That’s when their mother, 42, decided she had to find a new life for herself and her five children. Advertisement The family of six has been staying at the Dunn House, Jackson County’s domestic violence shelter, says program manager Robin DeBates. They’re safe now, trying to make a plan for the future. This holiday season, the mother asks only for gifts for her kids. "I don’t want anything. I’m just glad my family is safe," she says. The oldest boys would like a way to get to school and back, either BMX bicycles or skateboards and helmets. The 12-year-old boy would like a scooter and a helmet. His 9-year-old sister would like movie passes so they can spend fun time together as a family. The youngest child, a 7-year-old boy, would benefit from books for beginning readers. Although the mother isn’t interested in gifts for herself, DeBates notes that in her rare free time, the woman likes to knit and crochet. Donations can be delivered to Community Works, the Medford social service agency that runs the shelter. The office is at 900 E. Main St., Medford, OR 97501.
