Crater gets defensive, advances to title game COOS BAY - Crater continued its successful preseason, advancing to the championship game of the Marshfield Red Lion Invitational on Friday. The Comets (7-2) stepped up their defensive pressure in the second half and rolled past Marshfield, 58-39. With the victory comes the biggest test of the season for Crater tonight, when it faces Prairie High of Vancouver, Wash. Prairie easily defeated North Bend. "That will be the best team we've seen this year," said Comets coach Matt Meunier. "They are very solid. They have three guys who are 6 foot 5." Against Marshfield, Crater made only 9 of 31 first-half field goals and trailed 26-23 at halftime. The Comets then put on the clamps, holding the Pirates to 13 points the final two quarters. "We upped the pressure and picked them up in the full court," said Meunier. "We turned some steals into easy layups." Andrew Norum had a handful of blocked shots and steals to ignite the defense. In the fourth quarter, Trevor Ryan served as the Comets' go-to guy early, scoring six of his 13 points in the period. Derek Petersen led Crater with 15 points, and Norum had 13. Mahr scored 21 points as the Cavemen overcame 29 points from Madison's Chris Stephens to advance. Grants Pass (7-1) held a 15-point lead in the second quarter before a barrage of 3-pointers by Madison cut the halftime deficit to five. The Caveman took control for good in the third quarter with a 21-13 scoring advantage. Tyler York dished out seven assists, while Bruce Voges and Brant Minor each had four. Columbia River used a 20-point effort from 6-foot-3 wing Paul Brown and dominated Phoenix inside behind 6-9 Brett Smedley. Brett Ellis scored eight to lead the Pirates, who managed only 14 points in the second half.
