KU boys, Ashland girls win predistrict meet photo by Jim Craven EAGLE POINT - It's still early, but as the Southern Oregon Conference predistrict cross country meet concluded Wednesday, it was clear the top boys and girls teams still have a familiar ring. The Klamath Union boys didn't back down from its recent state conquests and the Ashland girls hinted at another successful season despite the loss of Paris Edwards to graduation. KU's Lauren Jespersen and Jacob Gomez finished first and second, respectively, to help the boys to an easy victory. Jespersen cruised in at 15 minutes, 58 seconds, eclipsing Gomez (15:59) as the Pelicans legged out 41 points. South Medford's Shaun Olson took third (16:15), while Roseburg's Adam Wadsworth (16:47) took fourth and KU's Alex Pellegrino (16:55) fifth. "Shaun Olson ran really well," said South Medford coach Bill Rowan. "He's closing the gap between himself and the top two runners." Ashland grabbed second overall, just 12 points behind the Pelicans. "I thought Ashland's boys did a good job today," said Rowan. "They really stepped it up for this early." In girls, the two-time defending SOC champion Grizzlies raced to a convincing victory. Roseburg's Melis Garner took first individually with a time of 19:45. Klamath Union's Katie Leary took second (20:22) and Ashland's Kendall Clark (21:12) grabbed third. North Medford's Sarah Dalton (21:20) finished fourth and the Grizzlies Mariah Mayfield (21:26) rounded out the top five. "Nothing really surprised me today," said Rowan. "But it is still early so a lot could change." BOYS TEAM SCORES - Klamath Union 41, Ashland 53, Grants Pass 91, South Medford 91, Crater 99, Roseburg 137, North Medford 193, Eagle Point 208.
