The Pirates overcame a near-disastrous injury midway through the season to qualify for the Class 3A playoffs, and finished with a 7-3 record — a high-water mark for Crowston at Phoenix. The impressive campaign didn’t go unnoticed, with four Phoenix players being named to the first-team all-conference list as voted by the Skyline Conference’s coaches. Junior quarterback Matt Hagert earned first-team status, and was joined by junior offensive guard Brandon Bucich, senior defensive lineman Chava Haro and senior tailback Max Boots. North Valley senior wide receiver Anthony Spain was named offensive player of the year, while teammate Brennan Olander, a junior defensive lineman, took top defensive honors. Knights’ coach Todd Willaman and Crowston shared coach-of-the-year honors. Advertisement Boots played in only three complete games before going down with a season-ending knee injury early in the Pirates’ fourth contest against North Valley. But the senior still managed to rush for 730 yards (182.5 per game average) and 10 touchdowns. "I think the coaches showed respect for what they thought Max could have done," said Crowston of Boots, who also made the first team last season. "It was kind of unusual to award somebody first team after he missed a good portion of the season, but he definitely deserved it." Hagert was forced into more of a prominent role following the injury to the star tailback. He racked up 1,504 yards passing and 14 touchdowns to help Phoenix finish tied for second in the Skyline. "We could see it coming," said Crowston of Hagert’s emergence. "It was just a matter of time before he put it all together in the games. It was pretty exciting when it finally started happening on game nights." Bucich, a 6-foot, 215-pounder, was the cornerstone of the offensive line that carved the way for the team’s 1,766 yards rushing. Haro, a mammoth 6-3, 320-pound defensive tackle, turned into a dominant run-stopper. North Valley, which won the conference and finished the season 5-5, also had four first-teamers. Spain and Olander, who each made the first team on both sides of the ball, were joined by junior linebacker Tim Stiekler and senior offensive lineman Zack Rankin. Spain finished with over 700 yards receiving and was the go-to guy for the Knights on offense, while Olander’s strength and quickness off the ball presented major problems for opposing linemen. "He’s such a big, strong kid," said Willaman of Olander. "He’s really tough to deal with." "Anthony’s overall speed really helped him," adds the coach on Spain. "I’m sure when the coaches sat down for their Sunday meetings Anthony was the guy they had to game plan for." Hidden Valley placed a league-high six players on the first team in tailback/linebacker Sam Dollarhide, guard Steve Gilbert, tackle Greg Kendrick, defensive lineman Matt Musselman, tackle Greg Kendrick and defensive back Joe Jiron. Tight end Skylar Morgan and running back Brian Ripetto represented Henley, while defensive lineman Eric Lentz and defensive back Jared Caulfield made the team for Mazama. Rogue River’s Joe Parrillo (defensive back) and Jamison Loop (punter/kicker) and Illinois Valley’s Tyler Wylie (linebacker) rounded out the first team.
