Griffin, Whitehead, Lee lead Comets to South Coast crown NORTH BEND -- Crater crowned three individual championships and walked off with the South Coast Classic wrestling title on Saturday night. Chad Griffin (112), Matt Lee (160) and Mike Whitehead (189) grabbed individual titles for the Comets, who racked up 259 points to edge Newberg (257) for the team crown. "I didn't think we wrestled exceptionally well but a lot of our guys came through when we needed it," Crater coach Greg Haga said. Haga was especially proud of 152-pounder Shane Webster, who won a dramatic 7-5 overtime decision over Newberg's Matt Keinonen in the consolation semifinals. Webster then lost to Bend's Seth Gordon in the third-place match, but the victory over Keinonen proved vital in the team standings. "We don't win the team title if Shane loses that match," Haga said. Whitehead claimed a tough 3-1 decision over Jake Leair of Grants Pass in the finals of the 189-pound division. It was Whitehead's first victory ever over Leair, the defending state runner-up at 189. Morgan Hawkins (119) and Cameron Fjarli (215) finished second individually for the Comets, while Andy Oman (103), Joe Green (140) and Burke Thomas (heavyweight) placed third. The Comets won the team title despite not having the services of two varsity performers. Justin Godley (135) failed to make weight and Nathan Reed (145) was coming off oral surgery. Eagle Point, meanwhile, finished third in the team chase with 171 points and Grants Pass was fifth with 159. Carlos Alvarez (215) was Eagle Point's lone individual champ.   TEAM STANDINGS Crater 259, Newberg 257, Eagle Point 171, Crook County 162, Grants Pass 159.
