Cascade ousted from state Prep basketball PENDLETON -- Playing its third intense playoff game in three days, the Cascade Christian girls basketball team ran out of gas. In the consolation round of the Class 2A state tournament against Oakridge Thursday, the Challengers made a game of it in the first half but couldn't keep up in the second, losing 57-36. Cascade ends the season with a 21-9 record. "We had a great season," said Cascade Christian coach Loren King. "We weren't expected to do anything this season after we lost 36 points of our offense to graduation. "But then we win 20 games and upset a school like City Christian." The Challengers beat top-ranked and defending champion City Christian in its opener. Oakridge (23-4) was led by Misty White, who had 22 points, 11 rebounds, six steals, five assists and three blocked shots. Kelly Clarke had a solid game for the Challengers with 17 points and 10 rebounds before fouling out late in the game. Cascade Christian trailed by six before outscoring the Warriors 15-11 to cut the deficit to 23-21 at the half. The game remained tight until six minutes remained in the third period. "We were right in the middle of things before we ran out of gas," said King. "I guess you could say we hit the wall in the second half." OAKRIDGE (57) -- White 22, Short 13, Johnson 6, Burnett 8, C. Class 4A Boys Playoff ROSEBURG 50, WESTVIEW 45 -- At Roseburg, the Indians rallied from a three-point halftime deficit by outscoring Westview 15-11 in each of the last two quarters en route to the state playoff win. Roseburg advances to a Saturday game at Redmond. The winner is in the state tournament. Against Westview, the Indians took the lead for good in the third as Joe Newton outscored the entire Wildcat team. He had 13 of Roseburg's 15 points. Newton, attracting fouls under the basket, had three three-point plays. Newton finished with a game-high 15 points and 10 rebounds. Marshal Hartman led Westview with 12 points. Skyline Boys Playoff NORTH VALLEY 70, ILLINOIS VALLEY 45 -- At Merlin, leading by only seven at halftime, North Valley blew the game open in the second half in cruising to the Skyline Conference playoff win. The Knights advance to the Class 3A playoffs. They visit Reedsport at 7:30 p.m. Saturday. Against Illinois Valley, North Valley ran its lead to 13 points in the third quarter, then made 15 of 23 free throws in the fourth to seal the win. Brendan Phillips led the Knights with 22 points and seven rebounds. Derrick Wright and Luke Godfrey added 10 points each. Illinois Valley was led by Brandon Henry, who scored 19 points, and Justin Neville, who added 15.
