Fourteen local agencies will get grants By JONEL ALECCIA Mail Tribune Fourteen local nonprofit agencies or community programs will receive more than $62,000 in grants from the Anna May Family Foundation of Medford. The foundation's second cycle for 2001 provides resources for projects ranging from a horse camp for at-risk teenagers and emergency funds at local schools to money for an anti-drug media campaign aimed at teens and their parents. Started in 1999, the foundation offers grants for Jackson County projects that help victims of abuse; serve children at-risk with education, recreation and cultural enrichment; offer emergency food, shelter and medication assistance; and provide employment and training for economically disadvantaged people. Recipients include the following agencies: ACCESS Inc., Medford, $5,000 to continue an emergency fund program in 2002. Camp Fire USA, Shady Cove, $5,000 for staffing the Shady Cove afterschool program two days weekly. CERVS, Medford, $5,000 to continue an emergency fund program. Friends Of CASA, Medford, $1,850 for training materials for court-appointed special advocates who shepherd at-risk kids through the court system. Helman Elementary School, Ashland, $460 to continue an emergency fund in 2001-2002 for a school with a high percentage of at-risk children. HOPE Equestrian Center, Ashland, $5,000 for a summer horse camp for at-risk teens. Jackson County STARS, Medford, $5,000 for a pregnancy prevention program for middle schoolers using high school role models as teachers. Living Opportunities, Medford, $6,300 for parenting training and support for developmentally disabled parents and enrichment recreation and social development for their children. Medford School District, Medford, $4,085 to continue emergency funds at elementary schools with high percentages of at-risk children, including Howard, Jackson, Jefferson, Oak Grove and Washington. Rogue Community College, Medford, $7,500 for the third year of a three-year Hispanic Opportunities Program. Rogue Valley Council of Governments, Medford, $3,000 to continue an emergency fund program for seniors and the disabled. Samaritan Counseling Center, Medford, $5,000 for a counseling position required to expand a bilingual counseling program for abused women and children. Southern Oregon Adolescent Study and Treatment Center, Grants Pass, $2,550 for reestablishing a horticultural education program for severely emotionally disturbed adolescents. Southern Oregon Drug Awareness (SODA), Medford, $6,400 for an anti-drug media campaign targeting teens and their parents.
