Chubb trims Pelican hopes for upset KLAMATH FALLS -- With the wheels beginning to fall off the Crater High baseball machine, relief pitcher K.J. Chubb came to the Comets' rescue. The 6-foot-3 senior right-hander struck out seven over the final three innings, including the last two batters of the game, as Crater held on for a 10-8 victory over Klamath Union and a sweep of their Southern Oregon Conference doubleheader Tuesday at Kiger Stadium. Casey Campbell tossed a three-hitter in the opening game as Crater cruised to an 11-1, five-inning victory. "Chubb really came through in the clutch," Crater coach Chuck Dominiak said. "He throws his fastball about 85 (mph) and they couldn't catch up to it." Klamath had the tying runs on base and only one out in the bottom of the seventh when Chubb fanned No. 3 hitter Ron Mitchell and cleanup hitter Jeff Martin to end the game and preserve Crater's 17th victory in 18 games this season. The Comets, ranked No. 2 in the latest Class 4A baseball poll, improved their SOC record to 9-1. Crater trailed 5-3 after three innings of the nightcap but went on a hitting tear to score three runs in the fourth and fifth innings and take the lead for good. P.J. Pardee's two-run double was the big blow in the fourth while Jeremiah Toews and Chubb delivered key singles in the fifth. In the first game, Chubb's two-run single fueled a four-run first inning for the Comets, who added another run in the fourth and then six more in the fifth when the game was called by virtue of the 10-run mercy rule. Brent Foster belted a home run to start the fifth and then finished it with a triple. ASHLAND 9, NORTH MEDFORD 7 -- At Ashland, Bill Rowe belted a two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth inning to break a 7-7 tie and boost Ashland over North Medford in the non-league game. Rowe, a sophomore first baseman, also homered in the fifth inning. He finished the game 3-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Jeff Allen picked up the victory in relief and Ryan Decker pitched a flawless seventh inning to notch a save for the Grizzlies, who were swept by North Medford in a Southern Oregon Conference doubleheader on Saturday. The loss snapped a nine-game winning streak for the Tornado, now 13-3 on the season. Ashland improved to 6-9. EAGLE POINT 3, GRANTS PASS 0 -- At Grants Pass, Eagle Point senior Bryan Strodthoff pitched a two-hit, complete game in the non-conference affair. Strodthoff struck out six and walked three. He worked out of a jam in the fourth inning when Brady Howe stroked a two-out double followed by Brian Richard's single. Strodthoff struck out Nick Tomasini to end the threat. A pair of unearned runs in the first inning proved to be all the Eagles needed. Ryan Garrett reached on a two-out error, then Gabe Barbee walked Nick Newmann and Jake Kleker to load the bases. Barbee's control problems continued when he hit Brandon Willer and Charlie Jackson to force in both runs. Non-conference CASCADE CHRISTIAN 25, RIDDLE 6 -- At Riddle, Cascade Christian batters received 20 walks and were hit by pitches three times in the non-conference contest. The third-ranked Challengers scored 13 runs in the third inning and seven in the fifth before the 10-run rule was invoked. In the third, Cascade (15-0) got a three-run triple from Don Jenkins, two-run singles from Aaron Beamish and Stan Kelley and eight walks. Jenkins, Beamish and Blane Newfield each had two hits. Jenkins drove in four runs and Beamish three, while Newfield belted two doubles. The Crusaders' (3-9) only hit came on Luke Tesdal's one-out single in the third inning. Tesdal came around to score after consecutive walks to Brandon Frankel and Brian Stout, followed by two passed balls. The Monarchs used three hits, two errors and a walk to score five runs in the top of the third. Thomas Ellis provided the big hit with a two-out, bases-loaded triple.
