Smith in the general election By DAMIAN MANN Mail Tribune Jackson County Commissioner Sue Kupillas said she won’t back any candidate after losing the Democratic primary to Sue Densmore Tuesday night. "I won’t support a negative campaign," she said, referring to the attacks against her during her failed bid for a fifth term. With a low voter turnout of 36.9 percent Tuesday night, Kupillas received 6,172 votes to Densmore’s 11,021. "It was a real honor to serve, and I’m looking forward to a little time off," she said during a county commission meeting. Quoting the late John Dellenback, a former congressman from Medford, Kupillas said, "I’m retiring with the consent of the people." Advertisement Bill Layton, chairman of the county’s Democratic Central Committee, attributed Kupillas’ loss to a push by clean air groups and other environmentalists to get her out of office because of her stance on air quality and natural resource issues. Thanking those who supported her campaign, Kupillas said she doesn’t plan to back anyone in the coming election, which will pit Densmore, a Democrat, against C.W. Smith. Jack Walker thanked her for her 15 years as commissioner, even though they butted heads from time to time over some issues. "You’ve now served longer than any past commissioner," he said. Kupillas, overcome with emotion, responded, "It kind of gets to me because I’m used to battling you over issues." She said it’s too early to say what her plans are for the future. "It takes a while to make a transition," she said. She said she will continue to work tirelessly for Jackson County in the months remaining. But she does plan to spend more time with her family, paying a visit to her mother in Idaho this week. Kupillas said she has done a lot to help Jackson County in her years of service. "I’m proud of everything I’ve done," she said.
