SOU volleyball team makes NAIA tourney HELENA, Mont. - The Southern Oregon volleyball program has reached new heights. With victories over 16th-ranked Lewis-Clark State College and No. 13 Carroll College on Saturday, the Raiders won the NAIA Region I tournament championship and secured their first-ever NAIA national-tournament appearance. SOU orchestrated a stirring comeback to knock off Lewis-Clark State in the semifinals, 23-30, 30-24, 24-30, 30-28, 18-16. Then the Raiders cruised past tournament-host Carroll, 30-22, 30-23, 30-22, for the program's first regional title since 1977. "I'm so happy for our players," said Paul Elliott, SOU's 11th-year head coach. "I had a really good feeling when we left Ashland about this team's chances, and they were absolutely awesome this weekend." Sophomore outside hitter Kristina Matchett ignited the Raiders with 16 kills in the championship match. And the Cascade Conference MVP put up 28 kills and 23 digs in the semifinal epic. Wrestling PETE BELCASTRO OPEN - At Ashland, four Southern Oregon wrestlers qualified for NAIA nationals Saturday in the Pete Belcastro Open at McNeal Pavilion. Mike Sills, a junior from Tigard, won the championship in the 197-pound division, defeating Jason Lovell of Oregon State, 7-5, in the finals. Colin Murphy (141), Mike Whitehead (heavyweight) and Nolan Harris (125) were the other Raiders to finish in the top three in their weight classes and earn national berths. "It was a good opening weekend," said SOU head coach Mike Ritchey, whose squad rolled to a 41-4 dual-match victory over Menlo College to open the season on Friday. Men's Basketball SOUTHERN OREGON 87, PRAIRIE BIBLE 71 - At Caldwell Idaho, after a lackluster first half, the Raiders poured it on to pummel 1-7 Prarie Bible. SOU wrapped up its season-opening road trip 2-0 thanks largely to the efforts of junior forward Martin DeGroot, who posted 16 points and 12 rebounds. "He kind of picked up where he left off last night," said Raiders head coach Brian McDermott, whose squad was led by 21 points and seven rebounds from DeGroot in a 77-74 win over Rocky Mountain on Friday. SOU shot 45.5 percent from the field in the second half and outscored Prarie Bible, 52-39. That after 30.6 percent shooting left the Raiders up, 35-32, at halftime. Other SOU standouts were Moses Olson (14 points and eight rebounds), Matt Zosel (eight points and 13 rebounds, including 10 at the offensive end) and Hamilton Barnes (14 points and four three-pointers). MARTIN'S 61 - At Chico, Calif., Sara Marks scored a game-high 18 points and Jamie Stanford had 16 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Southern Oregon University women over St. Martin's College in the Tri Counties Bank Coslet Classic. Kelley Dexter added 12 points and Melissa Core chipped in 10 for the Raiders, who evened their record at 1-1. Southern Oregon led just 39-36 at the half then slowly pulled away in the second half for the decisive win. "We did a lot of good things," SOU first-year coach Kevin Wilson said. Those good things included a 51-34 edge on the boards, 25-of-59 shooting from the field and 18-of-23 marksmanship from the free throw line. Marks, a junior college transfer from Eastern Utah, was 7-of-15 from the field with a pair of 3-point baskets and also had seven assists to go with her 18 points. Stanford, meanwhile, was a force in the paint until the 10-minute mark of the second half when she dove to the floor for a loose ball and injured her ribs. Stanford did not return to the game. "They had no answer for Jamie when she got the ball on the block," Wilson said. "She was a huge force inside." ST.
